I am certainly not going to argue with you there. I probably have a few others that are on par with Opeth, but they are definately one of my favourite bands. Did you get to the gigs at the Forum last year?
Punk rock you say Dean? I guess that makes the Sex Pistols or the Ramones R&B then

Punk Rock???? Blasphemer!!!! Deano, please!
Yup went to BOTH gigs at the forum (awesome venue) and saw them in 2003 and 2004 at the Corner...all gigs! Yup, I'm a tragic
In fact Opeth and their predominant use of PRS Guitars has inspired a lot of my building.........that ability to go from HEAVY crunch to CRYSTAL clean is just awesome....
I like Gidgee too Deano, got a few FB blanks sitting here.......not as dark as ebony though.

I missed out on tickets in 2004 unfortunately. Saw them at the Forum of course, and yes, it is a fantastic venue. Great sound, and cool atmosphere. Very fitting for a band like Opeth.
I had a sneaking suspicion regarding the PRS-esque quality of your guitars
I have to agree on the sound too. Not only does Mikael do it vocaly, but even live they manage to pull it off almost flawlessly. I dare say it has a good bit to do with the high end Laney amps they are using too. If I didn't already have a Marshall stack, I'd have myself a Laney for sure. One of the nicest amps I ever played was a Laney VC30 (30watt Valve/Chorus I believe it is). It was also with one of the nicest guitars I have ever played. A Landmark series Gibson Nighthawk (my favourite Gibson guitar by far).

Oooh yeah...would love a Laney amp. I have the JCM2000 TSL with a quad and I've never been that happy with it....get better sounds out of my Zoom G7 into an entry level PA!!! The Marshall will be on Ebay soon....spent about $3k on the bloody setup and it certainly doesn't make you want to pick up the guitar....and it should!!!! OZ Tradie found an awesome sounding Peavey a while ago and that blew me away....not cheap but holy hell it sounded awesome.
Hey guys, enjoy Maiden, saw them in the early 90's at Festering Hole (Festival Hall)....very cool...
Mikael Akerfeldt is a master...pure genius....to see him at the Corner up close driving those pedals was just a treat....I have bootleg DVD's of the 03 and 04 gigs.....man they really were that good.....new album on it's way soon

Thanks for the Gidgee pic, Deano.
Deano's allright with Opeth.
He's learnt a song or two of theirs so he's not all that bad!!!!
No real progress tonight, other than ordering hardware for a few more
builds.
cheers,Stu

ive been meaning to start using more australian timbers, the gidgee looks very nice, wouldnt mind using that in a build. at the moment ive been liking the idea of 1 piece necks, especially after seeing how you can change the look of a guitar by using laminate 1 piece necks. im not sure what types of australian timbers to use for 1 pc necks. it cant be a harder wood for the neck because it will be used as the fretboard as well. jarrah seems suitable for part of it, but i dont really know what woods would be good for a neck. maybe qld walnut, but thats all i have so far.
so what are some good timbers that would be a good hard wood for a neck, comparable to maple. ive been going to anagote timbers in sydney which has a great selection of nice timbers, but not too much in the australian variety.

black_labb, I was speaking to Perry about jarrah a little while ago, and he seemed to think that it is definately one to avoid. I was kind of disapointed because jarrah is something I have access to endless supplies of fretboard size pieces (decking offcuts). I think he probably has a pretty good idea about it too.
As for laminated necks, I have been deciding on it myself lately. I have come up with QLD maple and walnut, and blackwood. That's about it. I think maple with either of the other two would looks great. I've seen some custom shop Ibanez's with laminated maple/walnut necks, and they looked a treat.
I have the JCM2000 TSL as well, and I have to agree. It's not as good as it should be. I got my head pretty cheap though, from a bloke in Tasmania, and I bought a 1960A Lead quadie on eBay in mint nick for just shy of $600.
Stu's Peavy isn't the 5150 is it? I think they are supposed to be pretty nice amps, but have not played one myself.
Those DVD's sound pretty sweet. What is the sound/video quality like? They weren't filmed by a bloke named Paul by any chance?

ive heard that about jarrah as well. ive been curious as to wether it is too hard for most things, but not bad in a laminate, or just plain bad. im thinking for a 1 piece neck (ie neck wood is also the fretboard)so i can imagine the qld maple being a bit soft for that. ill keep looking around. maybe a sheoak neck would be good for a 1piece neck...

Well, I was asking about exactly that. Using Jarrah in a 5pc laminated neck. Apparently it is still not much chop. I believe it is used in acoustic guitar building moreso than electric, but from what I gather it doesn't have very good tonal properties, so is only used for aesthetic, such as headstock veneer.
Surely some guys here have done 1pc QLD maple necks? Is it too soft for the job? How much different is it to the US/Canadian maple?

give it a try
the only way you'll find out
if the result is bad you only lost one neck if good think of all the dough you'll save by buying local jarrahray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

Good point OP. I guess there isn't much harm in giving it a go if you have the time and timber to spare experimenting.
This is probably a little bit of a crazy idea, and probably the wrong thread to ask this question, but I won't start a new one. Has anyone used Ironbark on a guitar before? The reason I ask is because I love the stuff. Grew up around it all my life. My uncle cuts and mills it, so I can get it easily. I don't really thing it would have great sound qualities, but then again, it makes fantastic rhytm sticks (aboriginal style sticks you hit together, you know the ones). One day I'll try and get a nice thin pice (10mm or less) and use it for a top just to see how it is. I don't think it would be suitable as a single timber solid body at all, and besides that, it is probably far too heavy as well.
