You're kidding right?
Qld maple is an excellent material for necks and bodies.
Maton uses it in necks as do many others. I've built two necks out of it.
I far prefer working with Qld maple than I do Qld walnut or Blackwood.
Why ? Easy to carve with minimal tearout and less silicates than the others.
(Silicates in timber blunten tools very quickly.)
It has it's own unique tonal properties, so you need to take all these things into consideration when choosing your timbers.
In saying Qld maple is too soft for necks, you're pretty much saying mahogany is too.
And Qld maple and US maple ? No correlation..whatsoever.

Hey guys,
the thing im worried about with qld maple is its softer than american rock maple
Qld maple is great for building guitars, (as Stu said above). In fact the guitar I just built is 90% Qld maple
I was speaking to Perry about jarrah a little while ago
I'm actually planing a build using jarrah, when i get the chance I will post a pic.Last edited by Deano; 25th October 2007 at 09:42 PM. Reason: Didn't mean to sound rude.

Wow, that is some stunning timber you have there Deano! Just to throw my 2 cents worth in, my first build was a Blackwood body with a 15mm Jarrah top. I have found it to be a great sounding guitar, VERY WARM, too heavy for my liking but the Blackwood was a heavy batch so the combination wasn't good in hindsight weight wise. Would I use Jarrah again? ABSOLUTELY! In fact, I have another build on the way at the moment with a QLD Maple body and a nicely figured Jarrah top. That build will also have a Black Spot Jarrah 3 piece laminate neck with a QLD Maple centre in it. My learning has tought me that QLD Maple is very bright and Jarrah is very warm.....hence the combo I am trying on this build.
Anyway, here's a pic of Build 1 with the Jarrah
Also Deano, Perry has had a TONNE of experience, unlike me.....I also know he gets very scientific with his testing, also unlike me . I like the look of Jarrah and I have been delighted with the tonal qualities. I guess we all have different ears don't we

Sorry OZ....I have contributed to that digression....I guess it's easy for us to go off on tangents.
So, any updates on the Raging Fires Build?

The topic this thread was delving into deserved it's own arena.
So Deano's opened it up here where the ideas can grow into
a more topical and thorough discussion.
Here's the link.

Any way........back on topic.
This is Blackwood with a tapered Qld walnut centre and .5mm maple stripes.
Before shot
After tapering the Qld walnut and glue up

Tapered laminate! Nice one Stu. It looks great. Love the maple veneer in there too!
What method do you use to get your timbers smooth and square for a nice flush join?

I used to run two sides through my 12" thicknesser planer then joint the glue edges with a no.5 plane.
Now I've got a 6" long bed jointer for the glue faces.
It works great for tapering too.

I'm with Ethereal on this one.
Jarrah has thunderous lows and Qld maple sits between Mahogany and alder on the register.

Thanks for clarifying! I though that jarrah was one of the worst timbers for instrument making? Well, seems like i was wrong.
I would love to build with jarrah but it's so damn dense!
Also, i know it's used in snare drums and apparently it's dark and very loud acoustically, is that similar to what you guys that have used it?

Looking good, as expected of course
I have a quick question, what input jack did you use on your first build?
