at $5 for plastic and $10 - $12 for metal the wood ones will soon pay for themselves, and look great to boot.
I had toyed with the idea of wooden ones for lil's build, but the cream will look good with the zebra bobins I think.

Have you had any problems with them splitting? Would you consider tham as "strong" as the plastic ones? You could laminate the bottom with black and get a shadow line that way too.

    MOP?

I'm leaning towards darker as well. I'll cut a few set out tonight and play around.

No dramas with splitting with the sheoak ones. Real sturdy.

Good job on the template Stu. When I made the pup rings for the Conjurer, I used a similar template. My problem was that I then had to square off the inner edges to make room for the active pups which are not rounded at the corners. I used Jarrah (pretty strong wood) and mine were very prone to splitting due to the decreased 'meat' left after squaring off the corners.

I love the look of the timber pup rings .

Making them also saves plenty of dollars, I agree. Checkout http://www.pickuprings.com/store for a comparison....I think they start at $40USD a set

    cheers, dude.
The conjurer pup rings really suit your build
and definitely make them more fragile with the active pups. You did a great job keeping them in one piece.
These literally take 20 minutes to make two rings to finish stage.

Here's another set I made this eve but in Qld walnut.
Dunno which way I'll go with these, darker or lighter........waddayuthink ?.

i think matching it to the fretboard would look nice, but a waste of ebony. maybe a bit of a tint or stain on the walnut ones would get the same effect, but they are just pickup covers, and mixing a dye for them exclusively might not be a great use of time.

Hmmmm....I like the idea of using ebony but can see that it would waste quite a lot of a sparce resource.....probably have to sacrifice a fret board blank I suppose.....

I do like the other ideas though of using the QLD Walnut rings but instead of playing with stains, I'd just grain fill them with Ebony filler, rub back then a couple of light coats of blonde shellac before nitro coats......that would darken the overall look and come up a treat ........

I am happy to sould like the idjumit (yeah i spelled it right!), but could you glue your ebony pieces (ie the four sides) to a center piece, then route that centre piece out? That would mean a significant drop in wastage. OR you could go back to laminating the 4 pieces onto something and routing that out.
It wouldn't take too much to set up if you really wanted them.
    Just a caffeine induced thought...

actually, just to make it complicated, what if you were to laminate a thin bit of the sheoak on top of some qld walnut and use that. it would then have the sheoak with the darker outline giving it a nice look.

were all acting like a customer that wants to customise every feature of the guitar and wont stop thinking of new things and deciding on things.

You only have to have 1 idea in 100 work for you for it to be worth going through our prattle. Thats the joy of the forum. And because were not customers stu can ignore us with complete confidence!

Makes a really nice guitar into a REALLY NICE GUITAR!
    What colour P'ups?
That would make a difference too.
    Cheers!

Thanks for the brainstorming session Gents.
They're all great ideas and all worthy, and I'm sure have also given others
a few sparks of genius for their own builds. Ta guys.

Meanwhile it's time to rout out for the recessed trem, controls to be drillled, bridge p'up and then onto that magical part of the whole build..................The carve.
Triple carve or quad carve? he he he
Dunno what's better, carving the top, inlaying or pulling off a snug
    technical neck join.
Carving the top is the 'glory job' but I think I get more out of a
well executed mortice and tenon. Must be the carpenter in me I guess

I'm contemplating active p'ups for this one. The same as Ethereals conjurer, as that really impressed the faecal matter out of me.
Then again, I've got quite a few Seymour's in passives slinking around without a home to go to and may save the actives for the locking trem
    stunt guitar builds.

    You could try some mickb's..
Come over and take the set out of the Queensland maple build.
It's a good opportunity to try some aussie made pups.

drop one in a plastic container with some vinegar and a few bits of steel wool and leave it a week. It'll go nicely black.

    Nice tip there, Contrebasse.

Deano , they're your Mick B's and I feel funny about pulling 'em out of your build for my own purposes.
Keep them in there and get that guitar of yours cranking so I can hear them through those magic fingers of yours.
Thanks for the generous offer, though.
