    Arrow Raging fires build

More native aussie timbers with this one.

    Blackwood chambered double cut body
    Lace she-oak carve top
Set neck blackwood w/ she-oak headplate

    The first few pics.

I carved the back of the body first to work through an idea I had.
It was also the first bit of inspiration I needed to get rolling.

    On to some chambering

    More later on.............................

    Cheers, Stu

Have to agree with Deano there Stu. Very nice carving job. Looks really neat. Did you do it by hand?

I wish everyone would stop posting pics so I can get the shed tooled out a bit better and be able to get some pics up myself :P

I have to clean the bloody shed before i can work , we have a monstrous sized shed that i move around in when it gets messy, lots of dust and random timber pieces. Soon i will organize space for all of my templates, timber, tools etc..

Looking very nice Stu, have been dying to see that Lace She-Oak top on a build!

    Cheers,
    Nick.

I knew you'd be buzzing to see this one used up on a build, Nick

You should see how small the garden shed old picker works in.
Now that is bloody small, yet he has it all orderly and it works well.
I won't post a full on pic of my digs. It may cause envy.

This got glued and clamped , 24 hrs later, I then got working on it with
then no.4 and 5 planes. Extremely sharp blades were required to minimise tearout. Happiness is a sharp chisel, plane ...............

Tonight she (she-oak of course) got bandsawed and template routed.
And here we are, up to speed.
I'm finding it hard to capture this tops 'essence' in a photo as every pic turns out with slightly different hues. It isn't quite this orange, but close.

    Raging Fires.

    cheers, Stu

You cant even see the glue join,
I'm guessing a clear Nitro finish.

I had trouble finding the join earlier. Just had to work off the bookmatch.
Come 'round and have a gander next week.

    She's getting painted solid white.......................NOT !!!!!!

Damn that is one fine looking piece of tree Stu. It's almost good enough to be the holy grail of guitar tops.

I can sympathise Deano. While my shed is just big enough for one bloke to swing a small cat, it's getting the equipment to go in it thats the trouble. I at least have a couple of routers and a router table, and a bunch of other things I can attribute to my old man's over-collection of tools, like old AEG Circular Saw, Electric Plane, Jigsaw and some others. I also have plenty of clamps (can never have too many). Now I just need to get the bandsaw, compound saw, compressor and gun, block planes, rasps, spokeshave... oh, and the timber.

Mate!! Bloody brilliant!!... and your right Sheoak does give that nice an orange not quite as brilliant but damned close once you get the clear stuff on her... have you used Sheoak in a guitar build before? Id been told it isnt a soundboard timber and would sound like a flat catshyte on a guitar?... personally... well given the look of that so far WHO WOULD CARE???... okay enough

Can you clear something up for me? the guitar is going to be what about an inch inch and a half thick when done? how thick are the two sections? ie: is the sheoak thinner than the blackwood and how thick are each at this stage?

Mate that is going to be one bloody brilliant guitar

    Ta, Fellas.
I've got a few more bookmatched tops for carvies in this gear
Ethereal guitars did a sheoak top/qld maple body build but that came out a little bright. Sounded much like the qld maple build below in the other thread.
. Blackwood should give it a bit more in the balls dept.

The chambered blackwood body is 35mm thick whilst the b/matched
Lace She-oak is 17mm. I'll leave on 5mm around the perimeter, then the rest gets swallowed up by the carve.

Here's a sheoak f/board on this other build of mine.

That requires a certain skill with computers dunnit ? No chance.
Initially shaped with a beltsander, then onto the scrapers.

Tonight's progress with the Fingerboard of choice.
I went for ebony as an offset colouring to the she-oak and because I've never built with a non-stained ebony f/board before.

This will have binding and purfling added as will the headplate.

    cheers, Stu

    Stu.
Try Gidgee? If your using Aussie timbers, use an Aussie fretboard.
Very similar characteristics, and Gidgee is naturally dark!. It also has a straight grain.
I have a few pieces in the garage if you’re interested, that look similar to that piece of ebony..
I will post pic’s tonight so you can see what I mean.

Gidgee just hasn't got the same darkish black hues as Striped ebony.
I went through all of my native fretboards and none jumped out as a good
balancer for this she-oak top. Minnerichi, Myall ,gidgee, Mulga , Wandoo, Jarrah,
Cheesewood and she-oak all didn't have what I was needing.

I'm happy to mix and match to find the perfect pairing.

    cheers, Stu
