recent progress- post yours

another little update, i taped the neck pickup to the pickguard and then taped the wires to one end of the cable which was plugged into the amp. not the best way to do things, but it sounded nice. has a nice singlecoil sound to it, pretty close to a strat sound i guess. there was no lack of hum as there was not any shielding or grounding of strings, but i like it. seemed a bit bright for a neck pup, but thats alright as there were'nt any tone controls in it. my wiring ive planned will be able to put the neck and bridge in series to get a fatter sound by making a humbucker (with the coils further apart).

A newborn electric generally sounds over-bright and often thin. They take a while to shake down (one of mine took about nine years!). You've added to the brightness by direct mounting the pickup IIRC, and having no controls yet - even they bleed off a little of the immediacy.

FWIW, don't expect stellar results from the "two pickups in series" position. It possibly worked for people like Brian May because the pickups were weak and a little thin to start with - but generally it seems to disappoint. Best results I've had like that used Texas Special Tele pickups. Hopefully yours will fall into that category of ones that come out better than expected.

i purposely made sure that the pups were only wound to 6kohms (about as few coils as a fender would be) to ensure that they would still sound good in the series wiring. the bridge pup is only 6kohms aswell but uses a 6mm diameter magnet as opposed to the 5mm ones that are used with most anything else. hopefully it gets a good sound. i will put a switch in to get it out of phase as well.

Guess what! I made some progress!!

I managed to route the back rounding on my Brazilian Mahogany DC. I also routed the top ready for some good ol' flap diskin'.

Almost had time to do the pickup cavities, but i got a call to go wire up the s13 track car.

Getting there i think...

A Hello from the Netherlands
Just found this wonderful forum, and as i'm i guitar building to. I would like to introduce myself with my recent progress pictures.
It's a PRS lookalike mahogany body/neck with maple top. Wilkinson Hardware and GFS Pickups will be added when the finnishing is done.

looking good on that carve

ive been doing some small pieces for my guitar and bass (i have a hard time actually finishing things, especially once i get them playable). planned out a guitar to make for a friend of mine who i met through my girlfriend. is going to be a neckthrough with maple wenge maple neck and a wenge maple wenge fretboard (a mirror of the neck wood) with qld maple wings and 2 hb each with a switch to switch from series to paralell. ill be making the pickups so ill make them a bit dark as hbers to ensure that the single coil version isnt overly bright. the instrument will essentially be black and white. it will have a black sunburst to natural with white binding and chrome hardware.
