Gday Folks,
Been lurking around this forum for quite a while now and thought I'd sign up and join the party .
I caught the guitar building bug about 12 months ago from another member here, oz tradie, and life has never been quite the same since
Here's a couple of pics of some builds I have completed, massive learning curves to say the least! Plenty of sweat and tears (oh and a little blood) in these. Got 9 builds currently on the go, trying to refine my skills and get things better each time.
I have used Australian Timbers in all builds so far (with a couple of exceptions). I love the range we have and the fact you can go to the timber yard and pick it out yourself. Will share more details down the track but so far I have used Blackwood for bodies, tops and necks, QLD Maple for bodies, necks and tops, Vic Ash for bodies, necks and tops, Jarrah for a top and some necks, plenty of Wandoo for finger boards....love the stuff
Anyway, here's a couple of pics....
Oz Tradie also takes credit for the finishing job on the QLD Maple double cutaway....yup, he has a clue or 1000!! I am yet to master this aspect but 6 of my current builds will get nitro....from my hand!
I look forward to sharing with you all down the track and hopefully contributing in a valuable way to this great forum.

yeah, i just went silent when it happened. it happened as the drill bit clipped the edge of the bench as it came out the other side. i just stood there for a while, just waiting. somehow i didnt get too worried/ stressed about it. now that ive sanded it you cant even tell it happened. the open grained wenge doesnt show cracks very well.
that body shape looks great oz tradie, i like the rounded butt and nicely proportioned horns. interested to see what it looks like with a neck. what are you capping it with? is that headstock for the guitar body were looking at?

Here is a quick mock-up drawing of a project to be started:
The drawing is modified from a 59 gibson V, changed the wings a bit and shrunk the headstock size.
So far the timbers gathered: Mahogany body wings, Vic Ash, Jarrah, Vic Ash neck through. Unfortunately my single cut is on hold, few mistakes that I'm unhappy with
Never mind the other neck, thats another project.

Thanks black_labb,
The main reason the single cut is on hold is because my mate is over seas for a few months and hasn't contacted me to tell me what headstock design, pickups, finish, fretboard material, size frets etc... (obviously it's a guitar I'm building for him, he's paying for hardware as the wood is old mahogany i got for free).
The mistakes are very minor, such as a little tear out and a few little dents here and there, nothing i can't fix..i just hate mistakes!

Jeez RG, thanks for rummaging through my photobucket pics and pulling out a few favourites for me. I guess I asked for it.
BTW. This officially makes you a pic-pocket (thieving bastard)
Nice V man. Good to see natives getting a try out too.
The best way to evaluate which timbers work and which don't is to
build with them, so I'll look forward to your thoughts on the through neck
once you complete it.
I've got a through neck in the works too, but you wouldn't know about that one, due to the fact you couldn't find any pics of it in my account !!!!
cheers, Stu

that is some really nice looking sheoak (i think its sheoak, i may be mixed up with names).
i cant believe how many great looking guitars are coming out of the woodwork.
couldnt resist that one
ive just test strung up the bass after making the nut (it does need 2 of the slots deeper, but im having too much fun playng the bass without any electronics atm) its feeling great. that crack is holding up perfectly, i was going to tune it and used the tuner because i thought id see what it felt like when tuned to the right tuning, but i didnt know that the tuner plays the octave above (ie guitar frequency), which is fine when tuning in most cases. i however knew i was most likely off. i started winding the tuners to get to that note, and then thought i would check to see what a guitars frequency was, as this sounded very close to guitar frequencies. i didnt quite get to the guitars E but i was probably half way there, so i know that the crack is going to be perfectly fine. the bass is nice and loud with some nice sustain without the electronics. very happy with its sound (but thats not going to stop me from fitting electronics)

Correctimundo black_labb , lace she-oak it is. Another generous carvetop too.
Well done with the repair and more so, the whole build
If it sounds great without amplification, you're kicking goals.
Deano, seems someone's in a buying frenzy !!!!!
Good to see you're trying to fill up every second of spare time.
What are the shape variations?

cheers, Stu

Looks like I'll have to get some photo's done tonight then. Everyones posting away, it's looking great. Good stuff for the enthusiams anyway.
I am slowly drawing up and gathering timber for my first 'real' project at the moment, but while that is happening, I've decided to finish something I started 10 years ago.
It's a Fender Jazzmaster type body in Vic Ash, which I have hand carved with a rasp, so its almost like a carved top, except its carved top and back. I was 15 when I did this, and not wise to things like scaled length, so back then I had installed a Gotoh stop tail and bridge which wans't really suitable, and about an inch too far from the nut anyway. I've pull that out now, and will plug the holes and install a basic trem. I also have to re-route the neck pocket (it was done a little dodgy, but I am confident it can be recovered). I have a 70's Suzuki neck (from a Supersonic model or something like that). It's an amazingly nice neck, so I might as well use it. I also have a humbucker from a '77 Ibanez Les Paul copy which I'll put in it, and an EMG Select single coil somewhere that I might throw in as well. It's already routed for it anyway.
I'll try and put some pix up tonight.

Thanks for the positive comments folks and sorry for double posting this! I think because I signed up and posted on the one night, I couldn't see my posts???? Anyway, I can see them now!
Dean, the double cutaway QLD Maple build has a PRS style 5 Way Rotary switch and a Volume and Tone switch (3 all up). The 5 way allows split coil options on both neck and bridge buckers. I love the options it produces and don't mind the rotary dial selection method....you can achieve the same options though with a 3 way toggle and push/pull pots on the volume and tone as I understand it....in fact my new builds will trial out these methods.
Will post more pics when I get the chance next

Ask an ye shall receive, i guess
Yeah, I'm slowly introducing the good ol' natives (the timber kind...) into the woodworks, i have also been gathering a lot of natives for other fully aussie timbers builds (figured QLD Maple, Blackwood, Vic Ash, desert acacia's for the fretboard etc...just waiting to put them to use)
The V should see the last of my mahogany/any foreign tone wood.
Hmmmm...i will find those pictures Stu...even if i have to fly to Victoria and take them myself!
Cheers!Last edited by RGM; 17th October 2007 at 06:06 PM. Reason: Long, Hard day at work...i hate Long Hard day's at work, they make english seem like a foreign language...
