ive been thinking that i might do a samwich body with somehting in the middle and qld walnut on the top and bottom for some build, not sure when or what.
just connected the wiring on the bass, sounds really nice. took me ages troubleshooting to figure out that the preamp i made isnt wired correctly, so i took it out of the circuit. the pups were meant to be active pups, but i made them so that the coils were around half of what a normal bass pup would be, so that i could put them in series to get an output equal to a regular passive pup. anyway, using the pup on its own (through a much more complicated circuit than nessisary) gives a great sound. the bass amp i have has a gain channel so having the preamp in there isnt completely nessisary.
back to playing it.
only have the bridge pup in there at the moment, but it sounds very nice.

That looks like a bucket load of work there Grant.
I'm tipping you wouldn't leave that out in the sun for long, eh.
cheers, Stu

more work in the research department than actual physical work though...I think I spent 3 months of reading, asking questions before coming to some conclusions on what I am aiming for in the sound..
I have documented everything because chances are it will all be altered on the next build.

RGM
Youve saved me a post. I was wandering what the hell the deal was with the cat's tounge. Looks like its either really thirsty or youve been lacing its tucker with cocaine.
I reckon you could gut the cat, stick a piece of mahogany up its **^^% and turn it into a nice guitar.

Well there is a small offcut of figured blackwood behind the moggy.
Or at least I think it's blackwood, or a very firm, rectangular stool. OUCH
cheers, Stu

I did manage to find some and hopefully i should be getting 3m soon for a few builds. That piece is from a figured headstock, fretboard and bridge blank package i got from an acoustic builder from eBay.

Hey guys, need some info on carved tops as i am about to do my first
Anyway, i know how to the actual carve, just the neck angle problem has got me stuck.
I have notice that PRS carved tops are angled from the back of the bridge pickup to accommodate the neck angle, but then some people only plane an angle around the neck pocket area?
How are you guys doing it?
Cheers,
Nick.

ive been making neck pocket templates with angles on them. ive set up a "thicknesser" by mounting my router onto some rails that ive put on a thick piece of particle board (the sink cutout from the kitchen sink). i use trigenometry to get the right height and length for the desired angle and prop up one side at the right spot, then start rhouting until most of it is the tapered edge. works well, and if your doing a carved top you can do that before you start the carve.
i tend to use the router for that many things that would normally require a traditional tool. i use it to make butt joints (by claping straight edges either side of the wood and using them as rails for the router to run along) as well as planing a body flat (using the rail setup i mentioned above) making veneers, thicknessing... other than carving necks and bodies, i do most of my stuff with a router. saves buying so many hand tools. im a thrifty uni student.
