    Default Sanding / Binding question

    Hi folks,

just thought I would see if anyone could help with a binding question. Just putting together a strat style guitar and decide to try some basic plastic binding for the top. I have finished and scraped the binding flush without issue however I still need to give it a good sand for an oil finish (180 Grit + I guess). I'm a little worried about thinning out the binding or creating irregular height/width if I use an orbital sander with some of the lower grits in particular however I don't really want to hand sand the whole thing either. Has anyone had any experience with sanding binding or have any tips for how to go about it properly?

    Many thanks

    cheers
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew
Hand sand mate the only way to go you maybe able to use an orbital on front and back but not the sides as will make a hell of a mess. If you have scraped it all it should not take to much time to sand as should be quite smooth. You will need to go through the grits to about 320, 400 I reckon maybe even higher. Not sure how oil is going to work on plastic? try it on a scrap peice of the binding first I dont think it will dry. Some one else might know more about that.
    Cheers Damon

Thanks for that Damon. I thought that might be the case. The sides worried me the most. At worst if I ruin it I'll just round the top over as well.

    cheers

I agree. Work it by hand. You are at the stage in your build when power tools are best left on the shelf.
