most wood is ok for solid body
as long as it machines well, is well dried [= >10% mc] and reasonably consistent in density. prolly the most important factor i consider is its weight.
i like a machined body to be <4lb's ideally 3 - 3.5lbs ash of several varieties is widely used including vic ash - the most illustrious would be swamp ash from the states - well prized for its light wieght, nice grain and resonance - it is a pia to finish as is vic ash.
i would not hesitate using claret ash if i got a couple nice boards of itray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'
