Default Solid body wood - need help to ID

    Hi guys,

This is probably more appropriate in the timber forum however I thought I might still see if anyone here can shed some light as I didn't seem to get much response there (perhaps need better pics?). I have a decent slab of wood recently sourced from a relative and I was going to use it at some stage for a solid body. Only problem is I'm not sure what type of wood it is. I was thinking maybe walnut of some sort. Any ideas?

    much appreciated
    Andrew

    I'd say Walnut.
Walnut and blackwood can look very similar,Walnut planes like butter and Blackwood
can plane average to good with the grain and tear against the grain
Is that the way you got them ? or did you machine it before you took the pictures?
American Black walnut comes up this colour or a little more purple when fresh, the grain looks the same
and the Walnut I buy from the US comes with a black painted end.
    cheers Rob

    Hi Rob,

thanks for the feedback. I have since been told by someone else outside of this forum that it was probably American Walnut and I had a look at a book called World woods and I think American walnut is a likely candidate. I think the pictures make it a little difficult to judge and I can see why the other guys thought blackwood. They do look similar. I planed that wood square to see the grain etc before I took the pics. I would prefer Walnut anyway for my project as I read that blackwood can be a bit difficult to work and I also hear that the dust can be quite an issue for some people (not sure if that's accurate?)

    thanks once again

    Cheers
    Andrew
