Thread: 'Star of David' Singe cut away Build

Got some progress pics,

Got the top rough carved and the rear cavities routered. Just have to fit the covers on and the back is done (other than alot of sanding).

Keep building everyone.

have got the top carve finished and rough sanded. The figure in the top is already starting to pop, to my pleasure. The body is quite light, which my sister will love. She always complains about how heavy solid bodies are... and so she begged me to builder her a custom. Actually thats a lie. I begged her to build it for her.

It's finishing up quite nicely. Natural finish or is there some colour planned?

Also how did you make it lighter, chambers, wood, thinner body? (sorry if this has been covered)

Excellent Peter. Simply great results.

It literally doesn't get better than figured blackwood with a contrasting lighter binding. Your pics show close attention to detail and it shows in your build quality.

Though I feel like I've seen enough of single cut-aways for the time being...

Tim, The body is scaled down 10% of a normal sized Les paul, however the weight is mostly due to the combination of reduced thickness (35mm at edge and 47mm at centre) and heavy chambering. There is a picture of the chambering at the beginning of the thread if you're interested. Not sure of the finish. Will be a gloss, however I am going to test a few options on a piece of scrap. Most likely natural, however I might use a subtle stain with the top.

Got the neck glued on and most of the rough sanding done, however still alot more sanding to go. Got pics below.

looks excellent. the timbers have similar tones which should work well (once you have some hardware to break up the brown a bit).

ol' Mr Gibson (or whoever it was) got it right didn't he! 50 years on and were still "referencing" them.
Some things can be called "iconic" and "classic", this is one of them!

Hey guys,

Have sprayed a few coats onto a piece of scrap to test. I was wondering your opinions on the best. they are not much different. The first is with no stain and the second is with stain. I used a tinted grainfiller, so the two pieces turned out a very similar colour, just that the stained is slightly darker.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts (both positive and negative),

Always hard to gauge from a pic, instead of the 3d twist and scrutinize method,
For mine, I prefer the top one. Could be the light hitting from a different angle and all but the first seems to give off and show off the medullary rays that little more, which also gives off a wider rainbow of colour.

I think in the pic, the main difference from the two are highlighted by
opposite grain reflection from one side of your test-piece to the other.

if you took another pic of number two but turned it upside down, that would look very much like the first and give off lighter mudullary colouring. Make sense ? grain direction ...yada......

What did you grainfill with ?
