About to start first acoustic !
First post !
Well, as the title states, i will soon be making my first acoustic.
I have made a few electrics, simple Honduras mahogany and Sapele set-neck and neck-through that worked fairly well and was great fun to build but i would like to challenge myself with an acoustic build.
Well, firstly as this is my first acoustic i have decided on some cheaper timbers to use, instead of master grade this and that i have chosen Queensland Walnut back and sides and Bunya Pine top, Mahogany neck and kerfing and Sikta braces.
The guitar will be based on the plans from Kinkeads book.
So, this brings me to my question - does anyone have any tips, criticism of the chosen woods etc, before i start the build?
Luckily i have A LOT of jigs and such to keep me busy for a few weekends!

Hi Nick! Good luck with it! I can't tell you much about The Qld walnut, although I've heard its hard to bend, so I'd be interested to hear how it goes!

Welcome to the forum Nick,
Your choice of timbers....like Jack Ive got a concern about the walnut and its ease of bending. Are you going to be using a bending jig or the old fashioned pipe bender?

Hey RG (man) A man of many guises !!
Looking forward to your acoustic build thread. If it's as good as your electric build projects on P.G. , it'll be great !!
I'm looking forward to one day doing the jump to acoustics. Until then I'll remain green with envy !!!
cheers , Stu

I will probably go with the old fashioned/cheap way, seeing as the general consensus is that it is difficult to bend, and this being the first acoustic i think it would best for me to use IR, simply as it is easy to bend.
Stu, i have no doubt that when you do take the leap into acoustics, it will be one amazing instrument, after seeing your first build!
I should be about ready to start building after a few current projects, i wish i could start now but i have too many things to finish and not enough time!
Cheers!

Busy is good, RG !! And you certainly are that.
Are you planning an in depth build thread or a spasmodic update ?
I don't want to tighten the screws too soon, but It'd be good to see the progress documented with pics.
Heck.......I've gotta learn from someone, right?
I ordered cumpiano's book from Bruno at ALS yesterday, so I'm on the way also. Also eyeing off an ibex bending iron for bindings and the like.
And I'll post the finished first build here soon, once I pluck up the courage.
cheers, Stu

I may also order cumpiano's book, probably better than kinkead's book, i am also eyeing off that bending iron!
If i do do an in-depth build thread it will probably be at one place or the other, then eventually both when i have the time, but it seems that uses the luthier forums here are on PG aswell anyway.

Campiano covers classical and steel string building in one book while Kinkead covers only steel string. Campiano also goes into a bit more detail than Kinkead. I'd go for Campiano..

Kinkead's book is a bit slack, more of an advertisement for his company, i will buy cumpiano's book when i order next at ALS.

I have heard cumpiano's using outside molds now as well for most of his builds rather than the method illustrated in the book.
I have read both books and they both offer great ideas that you can adopt into your own way of doing things.....but cumpiano/natelson's book is such a comprehensive documentation that i constantly refer to see how he tackles certain tasks ...
I think Robbie O'briens DVD on building is also wonderful.Last edited by gratay; 31st March 2007 at 02:56 PM. Reason: more
