String grounding with a TOM bridge
Hi all,
while researching the above topic ( & coming across some ingenious ways of doing it),
there were also some posts that said it would be best not to attach the earth wire to the bridge. Mainly for safety reasons ( to avoid a reverse ground with the mike, etc).
Does anyone here leave it off & just shield the control cavity/signal path as best they can? Thinking I might just go this way. (build is 2 HB but both splittable)
Thanks for any input,
PJ

I think many of the recommendations against grounding the bridge stem from 2 prong plugs and sockets without a separate earth being common in the USA.
Every major manufacturer grounds the bridge regardless,

Hi PJ,
I've done the TOM bridge ground twice.
First time was using the stud/bushings type. This was done by soldering the ground wire to the bottom inside lip of the bushing, after making sure it was not going to be dislodged when the bridge height was set. Then making sure the wire was secure and grounding the other end to the back of a pot.
Second time is on my current build. This bridge is the Schaller Roller with smaller studs, so soldering was not a great option due the height adjustment settings required. So in this case, I've just fanned the stripped wire and wedged this between the stud and the body, so that it is secure when gently pulled.
Hope this helps

Hi PJ,
I've just done the same grounding method as BBM on my les paul junior at the bridge posts. I think it is necessary to ground the pickup system especially if the pickups are high gain like the P90s I am going to install in my build.
Cheers
Alan
