Sydney Makers Meet??
I've been thinking about trying to organise a meeting of Sydney-based makers where we can get together, bring a recent project or two and show off.
It could be a Sunday somewhere, hire a hall or something depending on numbers, set up a few trestle tables, maybe get a few demos going (bend some ribs, cut some frets, inlay demo etc ... play some instruments, ask some questions, have a BBQ lunch and then go home. I figure a medium sized school hall or community centre room is about $50 per hour, or about $200 a half-day. If we can get 20 people and chip in $15 each that leaves some left over for sausages. And if we organise it a bit and invite some players, friends etc and they chip in $5 or something, even better.
Anyone interested? Would you be happy to throw in $10-$20 to cover the hire/bbq etc? Any other ideas?

thats a pretty good idea. seems like the molbourne guys seem to have a fair bit of interaction, but sydney people dont seem to have much interaction. id be up for it. im not sure how many sydney builders there are that frequent this forum though.
id happily bring an amplifier for electric guitars as ive built the amp(s).
the only issue is i work saturdays until 3ish and every second second sunday. i could probably switch the sunday shift with someone if nessisary

Guys the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast AMIM members meet every month and do as you suggest but it's always at someone's home/shed.
I think it's fantastic to meet, but you're making it a bit hard with hall hire etc.
We never run out of stuff to talk about, and there's always someone with a new project. If someone has a bit of a problem, the workshop's there for someone else to give the demo.
My advice FWIW is to start very informally!
Cheers,
And good luck with it, if you've got two you've got enough to get together.

I may have to sneak into one these gatherings under an alias
How many hours drive from Melbourne?
That's what some of us do in Melbourne, just go to someone's workshop
and talk guitars and woodworking. I've met quite a few guys into geet building one on one that way, whether at my digs or at theirs. Much better than a hall environment too.
cheers, Stu

does anyone have a suitable workshop who is prepared to have a bit of a group over, or should we go with the original idea of hiring a place?

I could TRY to squeeze everyone in, but as most of you make geetars it might be better for a first meet to find a geetar workshop first ...
Otherwise just wait a bit, ask around and do a hall, with plenty of planning and a bit of phoning around to get interest.

At this stage, I am a complete newby to instrument building. (Awaiting delivery of Cumpiano's book). I am principally set up for turning, and make odd furniture. As such, I am probably more suited for hosting later, and there would be more value starting with someone who is already active.
