Perhaps a few links with what bought?

I think you may have enthused a few of us more hopeless buggers to give it a crack

Woody, I have used Ali Express. My daughter uses them all the time and I noticed everything on Ebay is on Ali Express. To me, it seems a bit more organised and the prices are the same.

They have a great App. I just looked at what others had built and looked top see if I could recognise the parts. I set aside a budget of $60 and ordered what I thought might be handy. I also ordered some toggle bolts because I always wanted some but not prepared to pay what Bessey asks.

How useful they will be we will see. The $60 budget went out to $110 but I doubled up on a few things. Everything I bought will all be allocated as a forward expense to next year's programs.

I want to give myself every opportunity to succeed so have factored in a fair bit of failure and parts.

In my opinion they are, they last MUCH longer & they are long enough to get 2 set out of each pack so they are really only 1.5 times the price.

The unwound Aquila are fine, it is the wound one that usually fails for me, I get about a week out of them.

Gee Cliff, you must do a lot of jamming. What is the difference between wound and unwound? I have a lot to learn.

I thought I threw out all my Spruce when I had my big clean up early in the year. Went to clean out the firewood box getting it ready for next years supply and found a small tiny bit of Spruce. No good for anything except maybe to help me recognize the sound we are sought of looking for. The Spruce was given to me by a guitar maker as I was interested in Toy making at that time and he had plenty of offcuts too small for Guitars.

Bit by bit, by not rushing in, I am gradually putting together an arsenal of equipment and supplies. Hopefully, I get the chance in Launceston to grab some timber when I am there. The next thing to get my head around is steam wood bending. That looks like a full time job by itself.

It is a bit like the difference between Holden & Ford.... if you google it, you get about 192,000 different opinions.

Well my orders from China are starting to dribble in. Still a bit more to come and then I will lay them out on the table an take a photo. Not much will happen with them until next year when Ukulele building will be my project.

Normally, each year, I try to have one project on the go. This year it was learning to play the Ukulele. Long way to go, but at least I know a lot of chords and enjoy the learning process. So not much will be posted on here until I get things rumbling.

Reading Cal's thread really inspires me and gets me thinking. unfortunately, I do not want to ambush his thread with my questions but at the same time do not want to appear to trivialize it by not giving it the applause it deserves.

It was mentioned in Cal's thread for me to keep the stringing simple for my newbie Ukulele build. What I would like to know from you more experienced Uke players what in your opinion it the direction I should head If at this stage of my Uke playing I only strum and play chords. The finger picking might come but at this stage I am concentrating on learning and imbedding in my muscle memory all the chords that appear in the music I like.

I had bought some music books from Book Depository just after I started playing and when they arrived six months ago, shuddered, and put them aside. A month ago, had another look, and thought they are not so bad and provide good practice for me. So, in my own way, feel I am on the improve even though those around me would not pick it.

Is their a recommended plan of stringing for a strumming only style. The good thing is, if I move on to finger picking later I can just restring which will be no big deal because apparently regardless of what strings you use they should be replaced regularly.

Is there a Uke Group near you?

If so, go along a couple of times & if you like it, join the group.

If the group seems to have an 'unfriendly' character, find another group. (This is easier in a bigger city)

Most of the Ukes out there are strung gCEA, go with the standard til you get better at it & then see which way you head.

Eventually you will most likely end up with more than one Uke & you can have at least one strung GCEA instead of gCEA.

    Hi Cliff.

I was going to a beginner's Ukulele class run by the U3A. University of the third Age. I met the Teacher at a Ukulele get together and he invited me to join. he is totally supportive and the group of about twenty are good people.

Unfortunately, I had to take a break when I had surgery on my eye and the medications made me very tired. Back to speed now, so will rejoin the group. Next year they have the advanced group that we move up to. So, that part I have covered. I feel that I am up to speed with what we are being taught and have taken the liberty to learn more chords then what the group are doing.

One lady who helps is in the Advanced group and she was showing me how to finger pick. Unfortunately, the music showing then strings is too small for my eyes, and trying to both at the same time is too much for me. That's why I spend so much time learning the chords so that is one less thing to worry about when trying to play something.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it.

I make up my own finger picking as I go along, I just pick patterns over a chord & fiddle with it til it sounds right.

Kinda how you would pick a chord arpeggio but mixed up.

Having a bass string instead of an octave string sounds better for that sort of stuff.

Well our Postie has been very busy delivering all my items I ordered from China. As I actually get to hold the part it helps me form an opinion of which way it can be best utilized and what is the best outcome for it.
I am pleased I have not rushed right in and adopted the plan that 2019 will be the start of my Ukulele building. I am interested in building the following.

Cigar Box. Which I will order from the USA and get my daughter to bring them back for me. She is an International Flight Attendant.

    Soprano

    Tenor

Banjo Ukulele and its offshoots. eg Panulele etc.

Nearly every day I learn and pick up different ideas, so hopefully, I will be able to put it all together and have a workable plan. The big question for me now is too work out how to successfully bend the wood. But, I will have a few options.

Thanks Woodie for that bit of information. I certainly will. Your advice, and those of others, is the reason I have not rushed into the building and have given myself time to absorb all the information, or at least, as much as I can absorb before I strike a blow.

This thread has now had over 7 thousand Views and yet I have not struck a blow. Patience is a virtue and when a few more items arrive I will put up a few photos. Nothing to see here yet though.

Bit quite in here at the moment. I am still collecting parts from China but a few more to arrive. I will wait till I get most of what I need and then spread it out on the bench and take some photos.

Not much use doing that now but I am still on target to have everything in place for a 2019 Ukulele, Cigar Box and Banjo Ukulele attempted builds. As I have said previously, I try to concentrate on different things each year.

Previously it has been Pen Making. Turning. Toy making. Sharpening. Wood Carving. Now, it is Musical Instruments which I know nought about. it could be like burning money, but still, plenty of guys play golf and burn money too.

Fortunately, the cost has not been too bad so far, but it would definitely be cheaper to just go and buy one, but that is not the point.
