    Default Tuning buttons

G'day guys, I've decided I don't like the plasticky greenish tuning buttons on the new Les Paul Studio+, I bought so I thought rather than replacing the complete machine heads that I'd make some new tuning buttons out of some snakewood I have in the shed. I've had a look on the net at some aftermarket buttons and they all seem to have a metal sleeve inserted to fit the shaft of either Gotoh, Schaller or Grover machines. I rang Ormsby's and the guy there said he'd never seen such sleeves in buttons and that they just fit on the shaft. Just drill the hole through the button to suit.
As I only have a small bit of snakewood (150mm x 60mm x 12mm which cost a small fortune ) I don't want to risk splitting them when I fit them to the shaft. Any suggestions?
    Much appreciated
    Cheers
    Mike

    i cant really help much...

i can tell you it will be fiddly work...

im assuming your talking about kluson style tuners, and not modern ones where the button goed on the 3/4round shaft and has a screw in the end...

    this may help a little

This is a project I have been contemplating as well. I was going to spin some Jarrah on the lathe and then trim to length. Do you have a better suggestion?

I reckon your drill bit will need to be very close to the diameter of the shaft on the tuners themselves. Andew's link to Frank Ford's page is the most useful Ive found as well.

Why dont you prototype with another hardwood?

i'd probably drill the hole first, that way you wont be too close to the edge on accident.

I've been toying with the idea of making wooden tuner heads as well.

I'd appreciate any links on how others have done them.

I was thinking that I'd use the offcuts from the neck wood (to match as much as anything) and would take the long strip cut it into appropriate lengths and then shape against a sander or with a dremel. Hadn't thought that turning and then cutting on the ends would be as good as having the width running with the grain.

Now that I think of it, penmakers use some beautiful blanks.....

not kluson tuners, Grover probably. They have two flat surfaces on the shaft over which the knob fits.. I'm making the knobs out of snakewood but thanks for suggesting some other wood so I don't wast what snakewood i have.
