Veneers for voilins
Does anyone know of a place to get the veneers to make the perfeled (I dont know the correct term) bit on a violin. Not the readymade strips but the plain veneers to laminate together and use.
Ive a friend who would like to do several violins and doesnt want to use the ready made strips.

Hi Fiat,
To make purflings (the technical names) I use veneer from Bunnies that is about 10yo. Plain old blonde timber veneer. To make it black I use a stain. It cuts easily with a stanley knife and a steel rule. Its easy enough to cut a metre by 100mm strip, cut three of em, stain one black, stick together (Titebond 2 seems OK) and cut into strips using ..... you guessed it, a Stanley knife. I cut the veneer across the grain so it bends easily,
edit, depending on the finish you are going to use you can use oil or water based stain. Ive heard leather stains are good but have not used them myself. There is no reason to stick to black......Last edited by Sebastiaan56; 16th July 2008 at 08:55 AM. Reason: add technical term
