BT,
There are various "tunings" for chimes, have a read here for a brief understanding...... http://www.windsongchimes.com.au/about-the-chimes.htm ..........and if you need to get a better feel for the different "tunings", find a retailer that carries a range of chimes and go have a little listen, most quality chimes will have the actual "key" printed on the tag.
My "go to" book for rainy days...........Holmes Principles Of Physical Geology.

I'm nearly finished a set.
I used a guitar tuner strapped to the pipe at a node with a rubber band.
There is nothing wrong with ali tube, brass tube will be very expensive.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Hi Cliff, I'd forgotten about that thread. I noticed that mine was the last posting too.
Its the same playground that i'm revisiting, the sound poles no longer work and I went bgack to the original company that supplied them only to be told that Telstra had taken over the frequency or bandwidth of the dopler radar so they no longer make them.
Anyway your right about the amount of info out there, however when all; is said and done I think you just have to get stuck in and experiment a bit.

umm actually stainless steel like you used cliff would be as nice as brass but in a different way. the brass would be smoother and rounder while the SS would ring more sharply - i would also look at bronze for a different sound again -
maybe there could be banks of gongs in different metals tuned to different scales or registers.....
and yeah it would be expensive either way even aly would not be cheap
for a sound sculpture type installation project my approach would be the same as building any instrument. use the best availble materials for an object that hopefully will be enjoyed by listeners and players long after i am gone
this sounds like an amazing projectray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

Thats a great philosophy ..I try to design with a 200 year life span*...which is quite reasonable with landscaping.
Unfortunately ( I'm in the process of sorting/culling 24 years of drawings) some of my better public work has already been bulldozed. Ahh progress, gotta love it.
* a design philosophy instilled into me by a very good tech teacher.
