WipeOn poly for guitar topcoating?
Hello everyone. I posted a similar message in the Finishing forum but since it is about guitar finishing, I figured I would ask here in case it is more appropriate.
I recently moved to Sydney from California and I build guitars. I know most of the good brands in the US but I don't know any of the names I have seen here in Australia.
- First, what would you recommend as a primer/sealer to go over an alder or basswood guitar body. Preferably something that can be found easily such as at Bunnings.
- Second, electric guitars are often painted with metallic auto paint. SuperCheap auto parts for example carries "PowerPlus". Is that stuff any good? Any recommendation for something better?
- Finally, I read with great interest on this board about MinWax WipeOn Poly. Everything about it sounds great but I have not been able to find out if it can be applied over a color coat. Most people seem to use it on bare or sealed wood. Are there any issues with this scenario?
Thank you very much for any help.
Bo

i used wipe on poly on a few guitars and various other items i built....
then i read the cancer warning and it had me scratching my head lol
now im using tung oil,
dont think that will go over colour coats though
if you go with the minwax, do a test to make sure it doesnt react

I'm planning on using either Cabots Cabothane poly (Bunnings - the last purchase I will make there) or Rustins Plastic Coating (CarbaTec) which is a 2 pack cold cure finish.
Australia
The Cabots did a fantastic job on my bookshelf and wishing well. Just applied with a brush, 2 coats and I only sanded between coats on the wishing well (although I will put a bit more effort into the guitar finish).

I haven't gotten as far as using it on my guitar, but I have used it on my bookshelf and wishing-well projects. Both of those came up really well. As long as I brushed the coats on light enough I didn't even need to sand to get a decent gloss finish for the furniture.
In terms of durability for a guitar, I'm not sure. It did seem soft for awhile. I didn't put books on it for about double the length of curing time and I did end up with a couple of marks in the wishing well as I transported it almost immediately after the final coat had dried. It seems durable enough now, but really needs to dry out for a longer time than the label says.
