What wood is this ?
Hi all, i found this forum yesterday, and love it. I am in the process of rebuilding a cheap old LP, and after striping it back i am not sure what timber it is made of. I thought it would be made of cheap basswood, but i am now not sure, it is one solid piece. i didn't think basswood had all the stripes through it.
Can anyone tell me what it is?

Doesn't look like any basswood I've ever seen. It could be agathis.

Yeah, thats what I thought when I seen it,,, Blackwood. But if it is as you said "a cheap guitar", I cant imagine they would have used Blackwood. And if it is a cheapo, it would most likely come from somewhere in Asia, right?
Dunno if they have any similar breeds of Blackwoods there.
The streaks might be embedded laquer yet to be sanded out?
Give it a lick and see what it tastes like.
It wont help in deciding what the wood is, but you might get a buzz from the chemicals.

I bought this guitar to practice finishing on. I wanted a cheap one to do first before i do a good guitar, It cost me $99 at cash converters. there was no name or brand on any part of it, so i just asumed it was some junk wood. the guitar actually sounded ok, even though the pickups were crap.
maybe i got a hidden gem with the body. the neck is ok to.

It looks like some sort of fire wood.

Still think it looks like a nice piece of Blackwood, once you have all the crap off it take it outside and wipe a good amount of turps on it. If its Blackwood it will look just magic and have chatoyance (like tiger eye effect) and glisten in the light.

Either blackwood or Koa.

Jus' throwing this out there
I would have thought blackwood, BUT it looks a little like a rosewood of some sort to me, I have brazillian rosewood that looks incredibly similar in structure, maybe it has been stained in the past or damaged by UV or yellowed by old lacquer?
Timber rot on the darker bits?
Is the timber soft?
I dunno if it's silly to guess it's some sort of rosewood; so don't hammer me for it. I must admit I know little about tonewoods..

I'm with luxemburg, It seems too straight grained and uniform to be blackwood.
