CD Player
I am in the market for a new CD player or DAC for home. Budget is $1000.
Any suggestions on what is good and what is not good?
Any reviews I can find on line?

$1000 is a lot to spend on a plain CD player. You could have a look at a Yamaha CRD-HD1500B. The street price should be around $1000.

Before you can get the right answer you need to let us know what you are partnering it with.

You might need to go to some audiophile forums to see whats a good choice. The Aragon is a classic (Poor mans Krell) and needs top notch partnering. Bet it was hard letting go of the ME 1500

The current favorite CD player in the under $1,000 class appears to be the Cambridge Audio 840C V2 which retails for about $850. CA are distributed in Oz by http://www.synergy-audio.com/
Another worthy contender within your budget is the Rotel RCD-1072 distributed by http://www.internationaldynamics.com.au/
There are also well regarded Chinese brand players like the Consonance CD-120 from http://www.osbornloudspeakers.com.au/
If your current CD player has a digital out then the other option is one of the non oversampling DACs that have come into the market from China - these can be had for under $500. The more flash harry name brand DACs from Musical Fidelity, Benchmark, Lavry, Redgum are more than a grand and therefore out of your budget. Then you could use the change to upgrade the clock and op-amps in your CD player with a kit from LC Audio http://www.lcaudio.com/index.php?page=3
If you are handy with a soldering iron and can stretch your budget slightly then there is the highly regarded Audio Note 1.1 DAC for US$800 http://www.audionotekits.com/dac.htmOurs is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.

Is there any real noticable (Sound) difference between a dedicated CD player and a DVD player??
Just really curious as CDs I am playing through my home theatre system (Yamaha) sound like S____T ?
I was looking at a dedicated CD player but I am not sure if I am wasting my money?

Greg,
I have a Yamaha 6.1 channel amp with a Yamaha DVD player (not a cheapie) and that sounds reasonable. However I also have a Rotel dedicated CD player hooked up and always use that when I want to listen to music (mainly classical and jazz). Both my wife and I can hear the difference.
I found that the majority of home theater speakers are all "oomph" and no musical sound, so we have kept our "musical speakers" and only added a centre speaker for speech.
It also pays to play around with your sound settings, as the majority of theater settings are not suitable for music. We only use 2ch or 6ch stereo settings for music.
