The high frequency effects of most grill cloths don't really matter that much for guitar cabinets, as most have rolled off a fair bit by this point anyway (probably starts rolling off around 5k). So I'd just get some thin black polyester from a material shop. Perhaps surprisingly, the frame will actually have a greater effect on the frequency response of the cabinet, I'd suggest a careful design to minimize diffraction issues.

Have you tried your local upholstery or motor trimming supplies place ? Look them up in the yellow pages under Upholstering supplies. I am sure you will find what youre after. Im a muso and make my own cases and cabs. Even if you went to an upholsterer, they may have offcuts left over from jobs which you may get dirt cheap.
Neil.

I wouldn't buy "grill cloth" you will pay a lot more for essentially the same thing.

some of the valve radio type stores have repro or genuine old stock grill cloth.
Or go down the boogie line and use cane chair bottom.
you buy it ready woven from an upholstery supplier.
was good enough for carlos the latino guitar god.

I ordered this stuff from Rocker. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?p...peaker%20cloth They call it speaker cloth. Seems to work just fine.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

...At the risk of evoking the wrath of the audiophiles (as I did on one of the amp building forums I visit!), I have used 60% knitted shade cloth for grille on both guitar & hifi cabinets... This stuff is about as resilient as it gets - the cats have been caught climbing up with no problems!
looks great on my guitar cabinet with the grille inset, isn't so pretty on the front-mount hifi grilles - the corners are a bit of a problem to make neatly (I'll perhaps try to 'weld' the corners with a soldering iron one day, if I ever have to do this again).
the audio? my cloth-ears can't tell- gut feeling suggests the polyester would cause some high frequency dispersion though.
Best wishes,
david

nothing wrong with shade cloth worth worrying about.
Certainly fine on guitar cabs.
you might get some very minor atrenuation at very high frequencies and perhaps some small amount of dispersion.
It is very common to cover speaker towers for concerts in shade cloth.
