    Default Water Damaged Speaker

I have a speaker that got wet from rain coming under a door.

    The particle board has swollen.

It is a reasonable speaker so I thought I could make a new box. It is about 800mm high x 300mm deep x 400mm wide.

Is it OK to do this?

    What timbers would you recommend?

Is there anything I need to be careful about?

Chipboard or MDF. Just follow the same construction technique as the old one.

Your biggest problem will be trying to match the finish to the existing; unless you are very lucky you wont be able to find anything even close, so I would suggest re-veneering both of them (take the veneer off the other one and re-veneer it)

Yep what MS said or remake both speakers, you dont need to keep them the same shape just keep the same cubic volume and the port length/dia.

    OK, thanks.

    It appears to be straightforward.

Why is MDF used instead of solid timber?

I am sure it would be cheaper and easier to use. Is the sound quality better?

it resonates less, giving off less of its own character.

    That makes sense.

I have a "few" projects on the go at the moment so it will be a few weeks before I make a start.

I don't know much about speakers but it would be interesting to make a set that would rattle the windows, one day.

I can rattle the windows of the house's across the road... using only a single 12" sub!
