Thanks Paul, but Josh, AKA Hyperkitten, has already looked at the saw.

    Thank's Chippy.
The Standard was a second line saw, a less expensive one, so it would make sense to use the simpler straight slot, as a cost cutting measure. It also makes sense to use a handle they already have.

    Hi Toby,

I know it doesn't help identify you saw, but "Standard" was a mark also used by Wheeler Madden and Clemson.

I've looked at the S&J Aetna, with side plate, nothing like yours, but I'll scan it later for completeness.

    Regards

I have a Disston Keystone K-3, which also has a D8-like handle, but with a straight cut slot, and no cover top. Again, a lower priced Disston with an off the shelf handle, to keep the cost down.

Yes, I wonder if WMC was taken over by Disston, and ownership of the "Standard" brand passed to them?

G'day Toby, yeah there's a few of them when you think about it, the D-8 was generally made from applewood though and the keystone from some other hardwood type i think, often painted or stained an such..some of them you could almost think they had more work put into them (albeit by machine) when you look at them closely, wheat carving , the outside edges on some are rounded over just a tad to have quite a nice finished shape really, just a bit more than is done on the D-8--i suspect the handles on the keystone are a cheaper wood species though, sometimes i have got one out to pinch some timber to repair another but they look just a bit different wood, close though

    cheers

    Hi Ray,
Yes WM&C was bought by Disston in 1893. I don't know if the use of the Standard brand has anything to do with that.

    The Keystone saws used beechwood.

A fellow Woodnetter sent me these pics of a saw that he has. It's a Disston #85 Standard, in the flesh. Definitely not like mine. It even has dome nuts.

We can take that one off the list! ( sorry about the image quality, I didn't take them )

Sorry to divert the topic a little, but thanks to Toby I read this page:
The Saw of C E. Jennings & Co. - Frank Brickhouse
and one of the WooHoo collections mentioned a Disston 7-1/2, but the link was broken.
Can anyone direct me to more info on this model, please?
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Hi Paul,

Where did you see the link to a Disston 7 1/2? I don't think I've come across that model before.

    Regards
    Ray
