Show yr horns - WIP
Here are some progressive pics of my process. Would love a bandsaw I can tell you.
Some jehova's came by and saw what I was doing - told me I was into witch craft, and I should make something nice. They didn't care for the satyr either. There's no pleasing some people.
It's paulownia.

My, but that did finish well! You're right = there's no pleasing some people. They can go pound sand. All the more reason to appreciate the subject. Your hand/arm?
I have a little bench-top band saw but a really big one is a really big sack of brass. Plus, there are some days when making fret cuts with some sort of hand saw is both peaceful and (for me) a little more controllable as far as "overshoot" is concerned.

Paulownia is pretty much all I've used. Factors influencing that are cost and availability. It's grown just up the road and I can sort of request sizing. This was made from off cuts and there is a nice knot in there.
Undy said he could dent it by hand but I can't physically make and impression. Could be my lady-like fingers though? Carving feel runs from butter through to weat bix, depending on grade. It sands well and is light weight. For fine though detail - not a good choice.
This piece is still not finished though. Got some nails to etch and creases to inscribe. Just had to get a photo for an application deadline. (For some reason there only ever seems to be one month from the call out for submissions and photos required of the finished work . Nuts!)
The satyr was posted around March/April. He's going to be in SxS at Bondi in October if yr interested.

Buy Paulownia Wood In Bulk or in wood Packs.
From all the blurb, seems like a wood of choice for carving, both texture, density and dimensional stability (little cracking)
They have carving blocks 4" - 6" x 24" @ $5/bf. 4x6x24 = $20. Not bad at all.
But the shipping would probably wipe me out

Very nice.
Maybe another with one finger or the V sign for the critics.

I knew it! We're in the age of digital communication.
"Half a Peace Sign" says quite a lot.

Loved the story of the JW's. They really can bring humour to your day.
