I've also given private messages to people(which can cause its own problems which I wont go into). I also try not to bug people with to many private messages.

If a forum member has deeper pockets than me (or if I miss my alarm meaning I miss bidding say $550 a planner..............) so be it. Maybe we should bring in a rule that says forum members shouldn't buy anything in someone else's backyard? Sounds fair to me. Would help keep prices down after all.

Of the 1409 replies and 68k views this thread as had, I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and say 1 in 5 was to an ebay auction(in fact I'd think that is a little high, anyone want to count?). That makes 280 odd items in the last 13 months. Anyone care to take a stab at how often a forum member that hadn't seen it already bought something that another forum member would have won v the number of times the forum got to see an interesting piece of gear?

We arent going to hold PM up as something we should aspire to are we?

Its also not just us forum members that are reading these threads, Non members don't get to see the pictures, but the text / content and links all work.

I seemed to get asked about once a month by some one that wants to put a mill or lathe at home. I've put a few onto this thread, just to keep an eye out for.

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I like seeing what machines are passing through the auction system and what sort of money they are bringing, Stuart noted something the other day, and that was the relatively low prices that sheet metal machinery was currently bringing..

I'm probably more interested in Grays or Evans&Clarke or Go-Dove, than ebay as such, but there are still bargains to be had on ebay. That planer for example at under $400 odd was a rare bargain.

On the other hand, if I see a Schaublin 135 going cheap,... I'll be very quiet about it.... But if I know someone is looking for a particular machine and I happen to come across it, I'll try to let them know about it.

    Regards

I think you'll find guests still count as "views"(though I could be wrong, and a lot of the 68k views would be the same person 100 times, though I havent bothered to work out how that side of things is counted)
But you bring up something I forgot to add to my last post. Would it be possible to set one thread as "members only"? Though I'm not sure how many people would come to WWF looking for ebay tips, I'd think their time was better spent on google or ebay.

Of course not. It's only the forum with the largest pool of metalworkers and the deepest pool of talent on the planet, after all.

So.......why are you posting here if pm is so good.

I have more to add but can't do it from my phone. It is great too see though that posting the planer in here pushed the price way way up.

For those who don't like this thread or site, Australia is a free country so don't open this thread or visit this site. Problem solved.

    Cheers Ben.

Gentlemen, please stay on topic, ie eBay and other auctions.

Discussions of other forums are not encouraged (in fact actively discouraged) on this forum, please bear that in mind.

    Great idea Stuart,

    Sorry for the OT Fred,
Would something like Stuart suggested above be done to this thread to save giving away leads to non members?

Just thought I would ask as it is a good idea I think.

Not sure if it is really needed Dave? The Planner proved that just cause its posted here doesn't mean magically it will go for big bucks. Whoever got the planner got it for a song, even if it does need a lot of work.

I have bought 2 machines due to this thread, one at auction and one on Gumtree. I'm not sure how everyone else goes about buying machines but i don't tend to look too hard, i just keep my eyes open and be patient.....Its paid off for me anyway.

See? now that's what I'm talkin' about! Not a bad machine at all with a decimal shift two places on that price tag. I was just explaining the Dewey decimal system to my family over dinner*. I might call the price adjustment the "Doofus Decimal" system hence.
