Many wonderful boats in the "I Built It Myself" area. But, once again, far too many were eye candy rather than working objects. Why to people feel compelled to build boats of such exquisite perfection that they become too precious to use? Why the fetishistic attention to detail that causes builders to line up all their screw heads? Adirondack guide boats seem especially prone to being made as museum pieces, but strip-built kayaks aren't far behind. I want to see a boat with a few dings in it, please.
No surprise: While Dave and I were sailing about Mystic River -- actually enjoying the USE of Chivita -- the guide boat and kayak guys were tucking their precious objects into bed in case it rained overnight.
Oh, and that Paper Jet is ridiculous. If you want a fast boat, build a Moth. Otherwise, build something that can at least hold a cooler filled with lunch and a few beers. Seriously.
Just my $0.02.
Many, many thanks to Dave and his family for enabling my first sail of the season. Chivita is as lovely in person as she is in photos. Her home-designed and homemade sail drives her very well, with a balanced helm and excellent pointing ability. I can't wait to finally get a real Goat regatta together so she can sail with her peers.

Many thanks for posting this great thread. I've got to find that guy that built little jewel. Wouldn't it be fun to sail that great inland ocean (Lake Superior) together. What a great little pocket cruiser.

Stop by my place if in mid Florida some time Paulie. I'll show you exquisite, yet well used boats of most types. Some show winners, other in various need of touch ups, all used regularly.
