P'raps 23 bucks for a used-up chisel is just a leetle bit ambitious? Maybe it would move if it were re-advertised as a vintage tooth-pick for Lumberjacks.....

Folks get bored if its a Ward
And don't give a damn for a Buck
They might stick their neck out for a Swan
And a Howath brings no luck
You can see they carp'le about a short #### Marple
BUT they'll never frighten off a Titan

That particular seller is notorious for trying to sell rusty, worn out, or incomplete tools for premium prices. Relisted weekly for only one year...??!! He's had some items listed for as long as I've been rust-hunting (about 4 years). Between his "woodyjob" and his other persona "Woody2012", he has up to 10% of the total listings in the vintage tools section .

Like other scroungers, I've seen a lot overpriced tools (and other items) in antique centres sitting on the shelf for many, many years in numerous cases. I've put in offers and stirred up the centre management a few times to no avail. They just shrug their shoulders. The stall holder will not relent. Makes you think there are motives out there that you cannot know. I particularly remember a set of cranked, patternmakers chisels at Mooraduc/Tyabb priced in the stratosphere. They sat there in their splendour covered in my saliva for a decade. I guess this balances the "good" buys where you see an absolute bargain because the stall owner has no idea what it is, or its value or just wants to dump it.

Yes, Doggie, some people don't have the foggiest notion of what's good & what's rubbish. I picked up my Record 07 from a stall where it was sitting with several other planes, mostly #4s which were either basket cases, or of very inferior make. They were all priced at $50! The Record was in excellent condition, with light surface rust on one side, and a well-used but still useful blade. I felt a little guilty getting it at that price, but all I had on me was a $50 note.....

    Cheers,

    HAHAHA...
I saw the owner of those chisels one day, many years ago dusting them off...I had a very frank exchange of views about tool prices with him that day. Some folk here know I can be a little forthright with my opinions

He didn't react too well to my offer to supply him as many as he wanted, maybe 100 or more at half his price.

I didn't take in that word ... 'skiver' ... before.
I'm immediately thinking of 'skiving off' from school or work.

... "trimming" your attendance or effort ... ?

They'd have to be related, right?

Maybe the truanting bit was the first usage? ... skive: definition of skive (1) in Oxford dictionary (British & World English)

Doesn't it also refer to the leather used to cover desks?
ps just checked and it does refer to thinning leather also.
