I also agree with you all when it comes to real V's Kit Bullet pens and think that most people would not care when it came to the bolts but I do and prefer to make my 308 and 3006 etc. Another thing I wanted to comment on was what Mik said with regards to the like button. I think the like button was the worse thing that that ever put on the forum because not alot of people seem to comment at all anymore
It is sad to also think that alot of the comments are from only a small group of people considering the amount of members we have. I would really like to see people get back into commenting on the forum and not just hitting the like button
anyway thats my small rant and by the way keep up the great work Mik it is always good to see people doing different types of stuff.
Cheers Ian

I don't think the Like button has affected the number of replies to threads here.
As long as I have been a moderator the percentage of replies in a thread on the forum has run at between 5 and 10% of views, that is if there are 100 views for a thread there will be around 5 -10 replies, usually closer to 5 (or below).
If you have a look at other forums here you will see that is the ratio elsewhere as well.
"Likes" have added to this response rate, people use this facility if they don't have anything specific to say about an item on display, are in a hurry or just plain can't be bothered thinking of something different to say every time they look at something.
I regularly look at IAP, the US pen forum, and the Like button there appears to be used in a similar fashion, the ratio of views to replies is about the same as it is here.
You are correct though that there appears to be a small group of regulars that bother to reply to posts, and some people that were regulars seem to have stopped replying or don't visit anymore.
This is reflected on some other pen forums as well. I used to go regularly to Pen Turners Paradise and The Pen Shop, both these forums are now only a shadow of their former self. I may visit once a month and find less than 10 new posts.
It would be good to get more activity here, not only posting pens but people showing new techniques, tutorials etc., but it seems to be the nature of todays' society that there are more watchers than active participants, or dare I say it, more takers than givers. Just ask those organisations that depend on volunteers for their existence.

i think the like button has removed a small amount of comments from some people who would normally have given a thumbs up or a what he said, it has allowed other forumites who know very little about that particular side of the craft to acknowledge what they like
in all clubs regardless of how many members you have there is usually only 6 people do all the work i.e. committee members, and thats pretty much the ratio Fred is talking about
i find i am reluctant to mention on someones thread that something is wrong, small or big, with what they have created - they may be offended and run away
i always put C&C welcome at the bottom of my threads, if i have a problem then i want to know about it, really if you are posting photos for view then you are asking for approval or constructive criticism - i think from now on if i see some that could be addressed i will in a constructive way
tutorials and i are never going to co-exist but if someone asks me a question then i answer it, i don't think things should be handed out on a platter, just creates as said above takers and no givers, at least my way they must have communicated in some way
hiya Tony, thanks for the feedback mate
glad to hear that you have sold one of the blanks i sent, pity you didn't get a photo i was looking forward to seeing what you were going to do
all the best

Hmmmmmm
I love the blank and the whole MECHA style. Great work.
Will try it myself one day.
Dont like the MkII style bolt action at all
Scope looks like an afterthought, and the bolt action too stubby and too short in action for my liking.
Hopefully the MkI is still produced.
As for the real v fake bullet pens, 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. I haven't done many real bullet pens (ok 2 50Cal kit jobbies from PSI for a mate) but have a bunch of casings to try.
I always say it is based on a bullet/in the style of a bullet/simulated bullet, never ever say it is a real bullet, a blind man could tell the difference, stupid/gullible people well....
Cheers
Shawn

Only 1% (10 to 1) of my Rifle Cartridge sales are the Bolt Actions. Gun show clients are gun and hunting enthusiasts and most think the Bolt Action is a novelty compared to the Rifle Cartridge pens made with actual casings and projectiles.

MIK you have really taken your craft to the next level with those blanks, well done Mate .
A comment on the "posts vs views" issue, for me the worst thing that has happened here is the "quick reply" feature was lost on the last forum upgrade. With slow internet speeds and with less spare time than ever to spend on forums, I tend not to comment as much now, I will just usually hit the "like" button to show my appreciation.
And with regards to people just coming on here to poach ideas, this does happen. I have lost count how many times I have got PM's from someone with very low or zero thread counts, asking how I have done something, I can send back a detailed reply with links and photos, then never here from them again, not even a basic "thank you" . I have no problems sharing my techniques with genuine members, dont get me wrong, but I have at times wondered why I bothered with the "fly by nighters".Brad.

thanks for the reply Brad
i agree with you hands down and i can understand you problem with the slow internet speed
its amazing on the IAP someone comes up with a new idea/design/segmenting, odds on favorite within the first 5 replies someone will want to know when there will be a tutorial, they don't even try to work it out for themselves
all the best

One of the best ones was after I posted a new bullet pen on a well known US pen forum. Within 12hrs I got a "request" from the library manager, and I quote:
G'Day Fred, I'd expect you to do a tutorial for this design. Please do soon!
Needless to say I haven't contributed either that tutorial, or any other tutorial since.
I regularly get PMs, both here and on other pen forums, from people I don't know from a bar of soap asking how to do certain things, most of them don't even bother to sign their PM with their Christian name.

i have had a couple on the other forum asking where i buy the bits to make these and if i can give them links to the items....
i first saw the basic design for these on the IAP - Acme Rocket Zen
i knew there and then that i needed to make ME one of them... homework, homework, homework
once i worked it out with the help of SWMBO and a mate, i adapted my own spin on it, but paid credit to the original owner of the thought process - Many Thanks JJartwood - he replied at post #11

Many we have posted some of our work and there are the inevitable "How did you do that" or "When will you be posting a tutorial"?
When some one PM's me with these questions the first thing I ask is "What have you tried so far"? and in most cases there is never a response.
If the answer is "I have not tried anything", then I tell them I can't help.
If some one has made an honest attempt and has some questions I always try and help.
These people who want to know how to do something without even making an attempt with trial and error like most of us do, are just plain lazy in my opinion.
