My machine, came to Australia new, from England in Aug 1950.
Its seen a bit of work over its life. I purchased it in the used condition 20 or so years ago for $2000
The machine on E bay for sale looks pretty good at that price of $775 its had a coat of paint & someone has rigged up the coolant flow in the wrong direction (against wheel rotation) but all in all it looks good.
These machines were built in Manchester England around WW2 & thereafter & are solid, very solid, & bulletproof.
I would not hesitate on purchasing, but then it would ne nice to inspect longitudinal slides & main grinding head bearing.
The main bearing has a gravity fed oil pressure system to self adjust the bearing with an air relief valve.
    A long lasting arrangement.
    Good pommie engineering !!!!

Dam it looks nice! I think my next purchase will be a SG but I only just bought a shaper. It will take me another 12 months to get the misses used to the idea of buying another machine tool! If I dump too many machine tool purchases at her at once, I run the risk of shock loading her. And that's no good to anyone!!!!

Ahh so it leaks oil everywhere

I think the grinder Andre got would be more suited then the Churchill on ebay....

Churchill on ebay is an unknown... Could be a bargain, could be near scrap....

The grinder he got is firstly easily transportable.... Something a young fella would find in his favour, also simple and easy to use...

Should be able to do many things with it, especially in the tool sharpening department... end mills, lathe tools are all in the realm of being able to be sharpened on the surface grinder...

That Churchill sure looks like a bargain, i'm surprised it has not been snapped up. As RC says there could be plenty wrong with it too, hence the cheap price.

I think it also goes into the realms of not being able to move it easily which is one of Andre's problems until he has his own place.....

Bruce, the bearings in the Churchill sound a like like the ones in the Blohm, they are plain self adjusting (3 "blocks" mounted at 120deg apart from what i gather) but in a recirculating oil bath. The good thing is you cannot start the spindle if there is not enough oil pressure i.e oil has not got to the bearings yet.

The seller, Tissue Scars, has a pretty good reputation amongst those who have had dealings with him, so I would expect that you'd get a fair deal from him going on the comments that I've heard anyway. If you keep going acquiring new tools at this rate Andre, you're going to need a shed the size of a Bunnings Warehouse to keep them all in. Good on you anyway and good luck with year 12 if that's what you are doing this year.

Thank you, thank you. I didn't want to have to drive to Sydney at this time of year (and besides I'd have to find somewhere to put it - I HAVE to get the boat finished and out of the shed).

    Default Me as well Phil

    Me as well Phil
The time I spent in your school, with Andre (at our bench) & Bob, & all of the other enthusiastic blokes, under your instruction, was a time I will always remember.
Since that time ive scraped quite a lot of stuff, Andres Shaper Ram, my Hercus Mill, a couple of Surface Plates, & soon to take on a ground large cast iron angle plate.
    Love Scraping... thanks again.

    Hi Andre,

Can't tell from the pictures whether there are 3 wires or 6 wires going from the terminal strip to the motor, also a picture of the motor nameplate would be handy, also see if there are any markings on the terminal cover, inside or outside. Look for delta or Y symbols.

From what I can see it looks like Y and I can only see 3 wires.. you might be out of luck.

    Ray
