Does anyone have any of those chinese mag base indicator holders that are essentially a copy of the Noga style?

Looking at getting some indicator holders and not sure whether to go genuine Noga again, or if a cheaper one would suffice for a second holder...

I've got both, and while I think the noga is better, the copy works fine, and I've put a noga fine adjustment swivel clamp on the chinese copy. You can buy the noga clamp as a seperate item.

The fine adjust works nice and smoothly and it takes all the different mounting types I need. 6mm, 8mm, 3/8, dovetail..

So if you get the copy, I'd still get the noga clamp.

ordered ten dovetails...why 10 ...well I figured I'd better after using one of the ones ones i got from CTC...must learn to look at the dro...the littles ones dont like a 0.100 cut...it was doing a good job just before it broke



anyway the ten I ordered must have been playing up on the plane ride ...I received 12

eg CTC asks $19.25 for 32mm and the ali site asks $9.28...for the same make dovetail cutter..all plus freight

the 10 I ordered cost US$96.65 including freight plus the two extras...

Last Tuesday i ordered a Multifix clone from Create tools for the C10 http://www.createtool.com/index.asp I went for the A size set with a few extra holders. As seems to be the case with Asian companies, my emails were replied to quickly, and in perfect English. Not only that the order was sent on Wednesday, and it arrived today. About 1/2 an hour after it was delivered i had an email from them thanking me for the business and making sure i was satisfied!

The product itself looks good, far better made than the Bostar branded BXA from CDCO. I would have liked a genuine Multifix/quick/suisse post but they are few and far between used, even on German ebay. These are fully interchangeable so if i find one i can swap them over, but i think i will be happy with this one.

Most of the time you use it set parallel to the ways or orthogonal to the ways. These two positions are very obvious to see and set by eye. In this respect, it is as easy and fast to use as an Aloris toolpost with the two orthogonal toolholder positions.

Each position step is 9 degrees (360/40). So you could perhaps think of it as 20 Aloris tool posts in one. But 9 degrees is still a fairly large step, very obvious to your eye. Unlikely to accidentally insert the tool holder in the wrong slot, if what you want is a setting orthogonal to the ways or the chuck face.

The key advantage is that if needed, you can choose between 40 positions without having to undo the central mounting nut to rotate the whole tool post, and thus loose your orthogonal index.

But if you really need an arbitrary in between position, you can always undo the central nut and rotate the whole tool post, just like you would have to do anyway with an Aloris or Dickson tool post. What more can one want?

The Boeni post I have on my Hercus is similar to a Dickson. There is provision on the tool post for an indexing pin. I have never used it. Instead of rigidly bolting the post to the compound, I made up a knobbed locking lever allowing quick positioning of the post in any position and simple removal of the post from the compound. I usually remove the post when parting off with the rear tool post.

I can see the attraction of an indexed post if repetitive work was being undertaken. I seldom make more than a few of anything. However, my friend Bruce "Abratool" has in the past made multiples, often enough to have his capstan attachment permanently mounted on his 260. I think Bruce has managed with the standard 4 way Hercus tool post so it would be interesting to hear if he retained its indexing feature or removed it like I did when I used mine.

Don't get me wrong about the Multifix. I consider them to be yet another Swiss delicacy. If I ever own a little 70 or 102, it would have to sport a Multifix or a Tripan.

Regarding use of index pin on Square Hercus Toolpost.
I have left the pin in & find it handy for quick indexing although cannot rely on it for repeat accuracy.
It can be over ruled as its spring loaded.
The 6 position Capstan sits on the end of the lathe bed and is not a problem because its a long lathe bed, not the standard lathe bed length.
Its a handy unit for multiple drilling operations, & or threading with a die.
