    Hi,

not really sure how this works, does it screw onto the spindle thread?

    Ben.

Hi Ben, as the seller says that it suits a Hercus, it would be a safe bet that this particular collet chuck does screw onto the spindle thread, perhaps via an adaptor plate, as I think that they would also be available with camlock and other spindle fixings. The handle part with the red knob is anchored by the clevis opposite the knob to a fixed anchor point on the back side of the lathe. It would have a thrust bearing of some kind which allows the operator to release the grip of the collet to place or remove the workpiece. when the handle is released, spring pressure closes the collet and grips the workpiece, more or less like the operation of the clutch in your car, but collets when holding machined round bar are quick and very accurate, so very suitable for repetition work. I have just Googled for some images of Burnerd collet chucks, so here are plenty of other pics, showing most of what you will want to know about them, and some of their variations.

    Thanks Rob,

i did a similar search last night with much the same results. They look the goods. I was tempted to email the seller re the type of Hercus (ie spindle thread). Getting a collet chuck is on my plans to do.

    Thanks Ben.

Very similar to the Jacobs Rubberflex collet chuck. The advantage of these is a huge clamping range for each individual collets. Looking at the picture, yours has 6 finger segments and will thus also grip Hex stock in addition to round stock. If it fits your lathe, this is a highly desirable chuck to own and currently at a bargain price.

Wow thanks for posting that one Nev.

The bidder 7***treally wants it, surprising all the items he/she has bid on in the past are from this same seller

Default The Kearns HBM gets relisted

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261468400...84.m1438.l2661

Must be about the 5th time he's listed it with no change in price, photos or description.

I sent him a list of questions and asked for photos of the sliding ways etc so I could better assess condition. Got no response at all. Perhaps he thinks that people who ask questions aren't going to buy (tyre kickers I think he calls them).

Oh well, not like it's the only one ever made, it looks rough, it's overpriced for what it is, guess he'll keep listing it for a fair while yet. I'll just keep looking - not like I actually need one ATM though a job did come up where a HBM would have been better than a mill.

I'd just like one to play with.....

Recently (well a while back now), Chains and Accessories in Adelaide was mostly bought up by Royce-Cross motors but some was bought up by Hercus. The building that C&A were in has had the lease expire, so this is the result. Our factory is near ish, so I could probably sweet talk the boss into allowing some short term storage of items while freight was organised.
I know the guy organising it personally, so if there is something of interest (either that you see or hope is there) let me know and I'll ask him directly.

    Michael

PS - I just asked - a full list is a few weeks away, but if there is anything in particular (like a HBM for example), let me know (I've already asked about that one).

I see a little gear hobber there in the flyer.... Of course if it is missing all the change gears, it is not worth much..

I wonder how his prices will be.... Manual machine tool prices are really plummeting.. Was talking to the local engineering supplier yesterday and he said things are quite slow with plenty of older people ready to sell up and get out.. They have had enough of the crap..

Before I had the ability to cut gears I had to repair the traverse slide shaft on my previous lathe (It got dropped on delivery but a broken tooth seemed to be the only damage). Simple job - small shaft with a collar on it and around 17t from memory. As I was dealing with C&A at the time, I got them to do the job. One of the comments the sales guy made to me when I picked it up was that it took longer than he thought as they had to make up the necessary change gears before they could cut the gears.
So - the hobber may have all the gears but then again maybe not. It's another one of those machines that if I had the space...

It looks to be some sort of automated gear hobber.. The hob is mounted vertically, the workpiece horizontally.. Found a picture of an identical machine that shows the hob..
