Hi all,
I will have to own up to being the buyer of the CVA.
To answer a few questions I did not make an offer but the owner put a BIN price on it ( presumably after I sent him a message as he adjusted his description to include the answers to some of my questions) which I obviously felt was reasonable.
I did read about it here but had already marked it as a watch on ebay.
I had sent him some questions re ? any bed wear but he states the bed is 'near perfect with very minimal wear'
? reason telescopic taper attachment is not connected and he said that it was not attached when he brought it and he feels it looks like it was never attached. He felt it was complete. ?non taper machine and taper attachment brought seperately. This was not a major concern as my DSG has a lovely taper attachment.
It also came with a ?full set of metric change gears, both steadies, 3 and 4 jaw chucks, coolant and splash guard and a few bits of tooling with Max spindle speed of 2200RPM.
As is often the case sellers but up blurry pictures which don't show the important details with only short description and that can sometimes work in your favour but sometimes its to hide deliberate faults.
Sometimes you have to weigh up these things and take a chance. Machine is not too far away, rare and desirable at a reasonable price and you hope the owner is honest enough and experienced enough to give you a reliable appraisal of the machines condition. I have tried to ring him but no reply yet. His written responses seemed honest and he seems to know a reasonable amount about the machine. In the end it was enough to get me over the line. You never know what the price would have been if you let the auction run but previous experience has taught me that desirable items frequently exceed the original BIN price and sometimes by a big margin.
Anyway I have been looking for a quality replacement for my Hafco AL 900B for some time and it will make a nice partner to the DSG 13 x 42 and the big Simmons microspeed. Won't have it home for a couple weeks but pictures etc will be forth coming then.

Well done...
Of course you do know they are inferior to the 10EE...
I can also offer some advice on paint colours, should you choose to repaint it...Light red, the colour of choice for the discerning man.

The qualities of either lathe greatly exceeds my capabilities but it is so much more fun to learn on a exceptionally well made/designed machine. It is interesting that CVA was able to produce such a similar ( some would say improved) machine without infringing any patents. Presumably the war effort was the cause.
Now if that pristine, fully tooled, rarely used Schaulbin 135/150 turns up down the road we both might be tempted.
As for colour I like to keep them in there working clothes ( or am I just too lazy to paint?).
Look forward to comparing the ins and outs of the two machines and their good and bad points (does to 10 EE even have any bad points? ). I know some of the other forum members have CVA's so there experience will be very valuable.

Yes, indeed. Mark would be well served if he listened very carefully to your advice WRT paint colours, and chose anything else....
I agree, well done. The last CVA sold for $3500 IIRC, so that price is right in line. Assuming it is in the shape claimed, well worth the money.

One of the worst faults is that you can't get a 5 cent piece to fall over when taking a cut (I think that's about 500rpm).
Rock steady (Medium).JPG
How are you going to use it to shake the bubbles out of two pack mixes if it doesn't vibrate?
The 2MT tailstock will still take you up to 23mm diameter so that's not a real drawback.
Richard is right though - if the TTA has been removed the cross slide won't function properly if it has the proper telescopic screw, so there is something odd there (but fixable).
I have one but I'm not sure whether anyone else here has. I have the manual in PDF form (and parts lists)

Nice one Mark. Could almost be as good as a Holbrook. I don't think the MT2 T/S taper is a really big draw back, as long as you have another bigger lathe. At least the CVA has a decent spindle bore.
Michael, i would try that on the C10 but since my compound is beautifully curved it wouldn't work......

I just noticed in the last picture in the ebay ad, with the accessories, there is part of the cross slide/TTA there..... The long flat bit of steel with the slot in it...

Re the Deckel FP1 discussed recently and sold on Grays for $7800.
I visited today to pick up the workshop trolleys I won and I can confirm the earlier description of the mill as "pristine condition".
I spoke to the buyer, a young mechanical engineer from Brisbane, who is setting up a home workshop for vehicle type activities.
I encouraged him to join the forum and identify himself as the owner.
John.

Hi All
I've got a Chipmaster/Bantam lathe capstan attachment, and a 10" (250mm) Vertex rotary table on eBay at the moment if anyone's interested.
The rotab has hardly been used since bought new.
Having a bit of a clean up at the moment and I have other gear that does the same job, hence the reason for the sale.
They are listed as a pickup item from Moorabbin Vic, sorry no postage.
