It will serve for hammering practice; may be I will have some success.Then I will have a saw for my first boat build!
The S&J medallions are nice ;my favorites are the older Elephant medallions.
I am reading Bob Smalser on hammering repeatedly,I may have to have the laptop next to me when I start out.

If you are following the bible according to Bob, go gentle with the big hammer in particular. You can always give more hits, but you can't take them away . A sacrificial plate takes the heat off.

Some of the brass backs are going back to be slotted hybrid

Paul the 88A was an ozzie "version" of the 88 ... which was like the D8 was to Disston.

That Miners Saw couple I had a clean of ... one of those was an 88A too ... think I had some etch pictures.

Maybe it was the non-Miner one that had the scrolling Retailers etch along beside the handle.

Just returning to the subject of headband magnifiers which was tossed around a few pages back on Nick's thread.

I am seriously looking at the Optivisor. I am in the process of buying some gear from the States and because of FenceFurniture's generosity I have been able to use his forwarding facility to consolidate multiple purchases. It would be no difficulty to add additional Optivisors into the package.

So I am addressing this to any of you half blind saw nuts . I know that some of you already have this device, but if you don't and are interested, send me a PM with your email address and I will outline costs involved together with some links on suppliers.

Do be aware that their headband is made for set focal lengths and this may vary for different work. I had to check what distance I would require for saw filing and it seems to be around 10" to 12".

There is an option to buy four different lenses at one hit and there is the additional jeweler's loupe also available.

I don't want to hijack this thread so if you are even vaguely interested contact me via a PM with an expression of interest. I will be implementing soon as there is another item, not connected with woodworking, I require urgently.

The 112 with two horns missing;is the handle Apple or Mahogany/Rosewood?
It looks darker in the photo .
I recently scored a 112 with a Rosewood handle and was wondering how unusual it was.

Interestingly I have been looking at the handles of both #22 and #24
(and the blades)
To look at they are very similar saws which makes me think that they are both 112s but I'm not sure
I've had a play with #22 the blade is very pitted and I'm in two minds about a refurbishment
the two saws have a lot of similarities which make me think they are of the same breed

The two handles look very similar but I think that #22 might be lower hung and is possibly older
I'll take a couple of photos in the next day or so to show the differences etc

As to the handle timber variety I have no idea as it is so grimy (some would say patina) that I cannot have a guess without a bit of a clean up. It does however seem dark

my copy of the 1915 catalogue suggests that the 88A is the same as the 88 except for a "brass heel plate"

I have the 10" (#4 lens) version, and whilst the optics are good, this is too close, for most saw filing uses, and I will be getting a #3 or 14" lens as well. Gavin and others have reached the same conclusion. I tested myself before ordering, and 10" distance seemed ok. But in practice I was closer than 8" with the Optivisor # 4 lens. As a data point I am using prescription multi-focal glasses under the Optivisor, and at my last drivers license test 2 years ago, I just scraped through the eye test without glasses, but with a sympathetic tester who gave me a few goes... That silver grey olde worlde charm gets them every time.

Thank you for that observation.

I measured my own comfortable filing distance at 12" which falls between the DA4 (10") and the DA3 (14"). Ooops, I have done my trick of stating the b******g obvious .

IanW advised me that the 10" distance is fairly standard in the optician world, but everything is modified by personal preference.

At least two of the people ordering the Optivisor are going for two lenses (10'' and 14") to cover more bases. I'm sure there would be room in the package for more lenses if people want them who already have the Optivisor. The cost from memory is around $24/$25 plus freight this end which would me minimal.
