Thread: 1/5th Scale Peny-Darren 1804 Locomotive

My version of the Peny-Darren had it's first journey outside the shed today. I have painted up the connecting rods and I think they look OK. I am making up a new connecting rod (that was in the model kit) I don't know what it did. It is driven by the main piston and drives another link near the sub chasis. It is on the flywheel side. Whatever it drives, it too reverses back and forth with the piston (no idea). With the locomotive, I still need to finish this connecting rod system, make up a blowdown valve and blowdown system and I am going to make a main pressure valve. This will be a challenge. Most of the work will be lathe work. I will be using 50mm solid brass - so lots of turning. Got material for the rails and sleepers today. Then it will be on to the tender. Really enjoyable stuff.

At this stage how big is it. Have you also got any ref material with a picture of the rod that you are not sure what it is for.

Hi Derek,

It is about a metre long X about 500mm high and about 450mm wide (bit of a guess) I will get the actual dimensions tomorrow when I go out in shed. All locked up and ready for bed and don't want to upset the dog.

No reference material yet, but will hopefully find something.

That really looks big sitting out in the yard. I think with the connecting rod painted, it doesn't look as big as it did in your other picture of it. What a great looking machine! I bet I have had as much fun watching this build as you have had building it. And I did all my fun without any worry! As I think you say in Aussie, that's a great build, Mate!

Appreciate your comments. Still a fair bit to do. The overall dimensions are - Total length including flywheel - 1200mm, height from rail to top of stack - 700mm, width - 500mm. Yes - have enjoyed making including mistakes as you learn from your muck ups.

Hi,

A number of guys have asked how big my locomotive is. I like the way Trevor uses a coke can to give some idea of the scale of his build of the Indian. Sorry Trevor, I am going to pinch your idea - but isn't that the idea of the Forum to use other people's ideas. Anyway - have a problem, don't drink Coke. Instead have used a can of beer (notice unopened). Worked on the connecting rod I talked about yesterday. Nearly have it completed.

Keith, G'day. I have been watching this project of yours almost from the start ,What can I say that hasn't already been said. I think you can be very proud of your creation & I would have to rate it about 11 out of ten. Congratulation's on a Top Build. Regard's Jim

Thanks for your kind comments Jim, I really appreciate it. I think we are both train lovers and fanatics. I love the build you are carrying out, it looks tremendous already.

Keith, Jim has covered it all ,but I think it should be a scale model , its not a toy.
In the metal work forums , (model engineers and other stuff) there is a metal model of the Trevithick Loco 1804, you will enjoy looking at. John.

Thankyou, I really respect your work. I worry about putting builds in the scale model area as I don't want people saying that it is not 100% accurate. I have done a few modifications (like using copper tube etc) that wouldn't be true to the era. I would be keen to hear your thoughts on this. I might come to the next woodworkers meeting (i'll discuss with Dallas) if that is OK to talk to you bout the scale modelling bit. I am interested in what other Forum members think as well. Thanks for the info on the other Trevithick loco - I will have a look. Again thanks for your comments.

Well it is certainly NOT a toy. I suspect that any 'purist' who didn't consider it scale enough, would get some feedback to the contrary from a few on the forum.
