Peny-Darren 1804 Locomotive
Keith, my friend, I have to agree with John about this. There is no way this should be in the toy section, The moderator's know the difference & I believe they will judge accordingly. I have never stated a scale in about eleven build's as all were T/J's patterns. You stated a scale before your build so if is not 100% correct as the thing was built, who would really know anyway. It is your interpretation of the locomotive as you see it. We all know you built a magnificent MODEL so make sure you put the next MODEL in the correct forum.Again, Congratulation's on a great build. Regard's Jim.

Keith this absolutely could have been in the scale model forum. I built my train using some brass parts. The medium makes no difference neither does the 100% accuracy to scale. None of the builds I have done were 100% I can say that and no one said boo about it. I agree with others your next build needs to be in the proper forum Scale models. Fantastic build and work in progress. Can't wait to see you start your next one.

In this discussion you worry about using copper tubing, these engines were not built of wood either, so I don't understand the concern about copper. None of the scale models are built of the exact material used on the originals, least that would be my guess. Look at the Indian motorcycle replica being built. It's not original material. To my thinking "scale" references size and dimensions, not materials.
Yours belongs with the scale models, just my humble opinion. Regardless where the thread is put, it is awesome work and great fun to follow.

Hi to all,
Thankyou for your comments. I asked and you gave a truthful appraisal. I apologise if I have upset anybody by placing my build in the wrong area. I honestly didn't know - I thought scale modelling had to be exact - I saw some feedback on "9 fingers" Jinker about the wheels alledgedly not being 100% and I didn't want that sort of hassle. I just wanted to be part of a forum where we demonstrate our wares, share ideas and make friendships ( which I am extremely glad to say that I have - there are some great people on this Forum). The skills I have seen are incredible and I hope the attention to detail on lots of you guys has rubbed off a little on me.
Again - I am sorry if I have upset anybody. This Forum is one of the best things I have joined.
PS - Is it Ok to keep posting my progress in this area as I am only about 1/2 to 2/3rds through this build ?
Thanks
Kindest Regards
Keith

Don't see a problem with that. Everyone has enjoyed this marvelous build, as evidenced by their comments along the way.
Keep it coming and when you start the next one you can choose the other section.
I don't think anyone is complaining profusely, just giving advice and helping out. The more we see of this type of work, the more inspired we all get.

When I first started on the forum I made it very clear that my work is based on Billycarts.
Even the Motorcycles are an extention of that.
A Billycart by definition is a Toy.
So in many ways my work can be classified as such.
The odd thing being the Outlaw I made won the Australia Open Scratchbuilt Modelling competition.
Around the same time it also won a couple of Billycart races.
A persons option can change due to circumstances and surroundings at the time.
In the end the only option that counts is yours when it comes to your work.
But for what it's worth I think your not a model or a toy maker.
Your an Artist!
Keep having fun mate!
Cheers
Trev.

Hi all,
Back to work. Making the boiler steam pressure gauge.
Materials I used - 50mm solid brass, a broken clock second hand for my needle. Onto the web for pressure gauge images for the back dial. Used PSP to white out the needle on the image. I then put the image in Word and printed off on photo paper. 3mm MDF for backing of this face. Used 1mm brad for needle stop. 5/16 copper tube and 5/16 tube fitting. Thin Perspex sheet for dial glass.
Drilled and then bored out the brass on metal lathe for housing. Brass chatters lot with tip tools. Made up backing plate out of brass. Cut out an fitted dial to MDF. Cut down clock second hand to fit as needle. Drilled housing for copper tube. I then assembled using small dabs of 5 minute araldite to secure.
The pressure gauge has come up OK.
