    Awesome Keith.

Gauge is right up there with the standard you have set with the rest of the build. Looks top notch.

Enjoyed watching so far and looking forward to more updates.

    Steven.

Great work on that gauge, and you seem to be able to do things quickly. That gauge would have taken me a week to build, with 80% of that time spent scratching my head trying to figure out how to so it!

    Hi All

Nearly finished the locomotive section. Fitted the pressure gauge and I made up a pressure relief valve (sitting behind it) out of some old air conditioner fittings a mate gave me. I have made and fitted that connecting rod (that I still don't know what it does). Now I am drawing up the wheels and design of the tender. It's pouring rain here today.

    Regards

    Hi,
I think that rod is to operate the valve gear, I have been waiting for the steam experts from the metalworking mob to come on and explain, but maybe they don't stick their noses in the toy making section. It's to their loss.
    I say again "fantastic effort."

Without having a clear view of this additional (connecting) rod, it could be as A Duke suggested be part of the valve gear, or could it be connected to a long stroke pump to feed water into the boiler? The injector was not invented until 1858.

    Hi all,

I have had problem on my bigger builds getting the wheel holes central and concentric. My lathe is not big enough to allow me to bore on bigger diameters. On the drive wheels of the loco I used my plunge router but without a structured approach I found this a bit "hit and miss". I still reckoned the router was the way to go with a nice 90 degree hole. I have designed a little jig to use in conjunction with the router that allows me to get a nice 90 degree hole and then draw up the wheel on the timber. I made the jig out of aluminium to sit snuggly in the routed hole. I then drilled a 1mm hole to suit my compass tip. I routed my holes in the timber and then drew up my wheels working to a master drawing I have made. I will use my band saw to cut precisely to the outside diameter of the wheel. This works well. If anybody wants me to make up one of these little jigs out of aluminium (because thy haven't got a metal lathe) just let me know the diameter of your router hole (must be pretty accurate for snug fit) and I will make you one free of charge and then post it to you. (again I will post to you free of charge). Just let me know on this post or on personal message. Just a little bit of thanks for everyone's support.

    Regards

    Keith

Great Jig Keith. Very clever. And what a great gesture to make one and post for free. This is what makes the Toy Forum and awesome place!

Super big shed cleanup today. Cathie said I had to do it. I wont tell her it does look better.

Working on the locomotive tender wheels. Similar method to what I did with the locomotive wheels except I am using multi-tool instead of jigsaw to cut out between the spokes, the tender wheels are about 60% of the size in diameter of the locomotive wheels and only 8 spokes.

Looking good Keith the gauge is great and it is great to see you start on the tender.

As for cleaning the shed just make sure all the mess sticks to your clothing and carry it into the house then the wife can clean up but only if you are brave. When the grandson visits and the get into the house he turned round to my wife and said "Grandad is in the shed again you can see the trail to the toilet" She just curled up laughing "Out of the mouth of babes" was the saying that came to mind.

    Hey Derek

That's exactly what happens - particularly when machining aluminium. The swarf sticks to everything and gets in the house. She is always handing me small bits of stuff that have been brought into the house. Must happen everywhere and does not matter what part of the world you live in - love it !!

Off the tender and back onto the final bit of the locomotive today. I made up the boiler blowdown. I found an old brass valve and modified it by machining down. I then used some 5/16th copper tube and fittings to finish it off. There is also a support bracket I made up under the boiler to support the pipework. I would be lost without my metal turning lathe. Think it is one of the better items I have in the shed. Use it for wood turning as well.
I found a model kit today for my next build. Stephensons Rocket will have to wait. This locomotive is a German 2-8-2 configuration. It's huge !!!! No sure what scale I will build to because I wont have anywhere to put it if I make it too big. Heaps of components. Could be a 12 month build.
Good thing is - Cathie made me get it - so I think I have her blessing.

    All the Best

    Keith
