I remember seeing pictures a long time ago, and they looked impressive. For those of you lucky enough to have grabbed one, how good are they to use/sharpen?

    Thanks,

Hi Craig, I wonder the same the same thing every so often, what happened to those hundreds on plane blades that we shipped out, surely one of two must have been deployed by now?

Maybe a good tutorial on making wooden planes ( and infill's for that matter ) is in order?

A timely wonder. I finally got mine working properly a couple of weeks ago with the help of a fettling workshop by Jim Davey.

Good to hear, was that one of the earlier stanley upgrades, or one of the last batch of blades for infill's and woodies? Picture?

    Default Sorry

I was planing to go to visit RayG today going from Melbourne to Shepparton to get a first hand update regarding the paring chisels.

I thought I had enough money in my bank account, however the funds did not come over from my other account. So I need to reschedule for next Saturday the 21st with RayG?

My apologizes to all those hoping for a status update today. Hopefully RayG will use this extra time to make more progress on the chisels.

Don't stress Helmut, I'll see you whenever you can make it... I was going to show you the jig that Josh and I designed to grind the bevels on the 3 smaller chisels. I'll take some pictures later.

I'm more interested in photos of the chisels.

Can you tell us how many chisels of each size are completed and how many are still to be finished?

Of the chisels that are not finished, can you tell us what is still to be done?

Such as xxx number have 1 surface to be done, xxx number have 2 surfaces, xxx number have 3 surfaces etc.

The ones that are finished, or sides bevelled, up to where the 25 degree cutting edge is the only grind remaining are all boxed up to stop any rust, I won't unpack those till Helmut gets here, the ones I'm working on are all ground top and bottom, and most of the sides, the side bevels are what's being done at the moment on the thin chisels, (about 50x) and then it's top taper to be ground on all and finally cutting edges to be ground.

On each paring chisel, there are 8 seperate grinding setups.. top and bottom, both sides to correct width, 2 x side bevels, taper thickness grind, and cutting bevel.

    Thanks for the update.

Just curious about the side bevels, how many are you able to grind at a time? Or is one at a time? Trying to work it out in my head how it is done.

Top and bottom can be done in multiples because they sit flat, all the other operations have to be done one at a time.. the sides are angled because of the water jet cutting. so the edges are done one at a time.

That one I sent you for reference ...

when you're finished with it as a referece, can you polish it up, sharpen, make a handle and send it back
oh and matching handles for its mates would be grand ... gidgee?

PS when you hand deliver it back to me can you also give me a few private tutorials on proper usage?
    regards

Yep... I'd be happy to do that... There are quite a few differences between the batches, some subtle and some obvious, I prefer the new version ( for obvious reasons I guess) but the slightly thicker and tapered blade I think is a nice look. Not having the side bevelled edges so sharp is another subtle difference.. More accurate widths... There might be some instances where the longer thinner paring chisels have that slightly springy feel that's preferable, but slight tapering with the new ones gives a similar effect.

Oh, I'm all out of Gidgee... would high spec bunnings pine do for the handles

Well, Helmut couldn't make it today, so I took some pictures anyway.

    2. My favourite, tapered, bevelled left and right 12 mm skews
    3. The three smaller width paring chisels
    4. Paring chisels yet to be bevelled and tapered.

    1. Bevelled and tapered. Some still need cutting bevels
    2. Cleanup and transfer bench.

We have some modifications to make to the surface grinder in the next few days.
