Thanks very much Bill. I can see why you enjoyed living down here when you did, and I'm sorry you had to leave, as I could use more friends here.
I can certainly sympathise with the growing old theme as every passing day just seems to be going past at a quicker rate then the day before.
If you ever feel like a day trip back to "the old country" please let me know then you and yours can stop by for a cuppa and a long chat. Any day, any time my friend.
Dave you can bring all the ferals with you too. We can always toss them in the creek if they start acting up...
You can bring your chainsaw or use one of mine if you see some tree that catches you eye. I think I can spare a few for a mate in need of some fresh turning material.
Cheers,
Bob

Sounds great. If you have not organised a do before hand I will try to work a visit into the September school holidays. Gonna be tightish as grandchild number 2 will be due at the beginning if the month but will have to take the twins to see their dad in Sydney so a stop there one way or the other will be good.

A little hint of Vice
I just didn't have much drive in me today guys, sorry. (Past posts in a different thread would explain if interested)
Anyhow, moving right along....I've finally managed to reach the point where I can actually show a bit of a pre-release of my on-going bench build.
While every bench needs a vice, mine will be no different......well sort of. Because of my "different" design, I can't incorporate any of the proper end vice or anything even resembling them.
Firstly, I'm not sure I could build one and secondly, I have no where to put one. I do have an old bench screw vice that will go somewhere as no matter what the design, a proper woodworking bench vice is pretty well mandatory.
It's the non standard vice like device I had planned for my bench that makes my ideas different. It sort of harks back to my "hotrodding" days where I was always striving to design and improve basic ideas and trying to build a better mouse trap.
Ok, back to my vice. This morning I spent a while with a 9" angle grinder with a metal cut-off disk. Got your attention yet?
As you'll see in the pics, I started with a very old Black and Decker Workmate. This had been handed down to me from my beloved Grandfather, so I knew it was never going to be thrown away. So there it sat (or hung actually), on my shed wall to occasionally be brought out to help me in my building projects over the years.
It had always been my idea to incorporate the top part of this Workmate into a new bench top one day.
Finally this old workhorse was taken down from it's place on the shed wall and after being savagely, but methodically attacked by a bloody great angle grinder, it now sits in it's new place, propped up with blocks of wood.
While I had given it a lot of thought before dismantling it with such ferocity, I'll never forget it's humble origins and its long road, to be re-born again hundreds of miles and many decades from the day it first came into my possession. I just wish my Grandfather could be here to see its reincarnation.
The main thing that has been my main objective since I began this build, has been trying to keep every piece of wood for the frame, level across every angle and now that I've sited the B&D top in place and leveled it as well, I now have to design and build a strong enough mounting system and then reduce the overall size of both the timber vice jaws.
Anyhow, I will leave you now with a few quick pics and probably a few questions in your minds. So whatever questions, queries and suggestions or criticisms you have for me, let me have it.
On with the show.

Bob, the HNT Gordon tail vise can overcome those problems. This is how I fitted mine:
Normally you're supposed to use a run of ½" dog 'oles, but as someone said previously "you can never have enough T-Track" so this time I'm using it with that.

Wow! you've done a beautiful job of fitting that tail vice FF. I seem to remember a comparison in the AWR magazine between the HNT and I think the Veritas model, and the use of the T racks is a great idea too.
It's all food for thought and I thank you for your serving.
I have committed myself to fitting the B&D WM purely because of the fact that my whole bench theme has centred around that, plus the router table.
This is not to say by any means that I am limiting my ideas to only one line of thought, and your very nice installation and great looking bench makes me want to try everything I can and considering my bench's design, I am open to any and all options.
Just like T tracks, you can't have too many vices either.
Thanks again for those excellent pics.

Thanks Bob, but they are really easy to fit. Route a trench, route a rebate, drill a hole, drop it in. If the bench top isn't thick enough you can just glue a plate underneath - very versatile.

Thanks FF.
I'll have to check into this and get back to you.
Hi Dave,
No, the model I used was a single level unit from way back when. Not sure if I'll get much done tomorrow as I'm running low on supplies which means a trip into civilization for my monthly top up.
Also, as I'm sure you've both noticed how much colder the mornings are becoming and how hard it can be to get motivated every day especially that now the wind is up and the rain is coming down.
There's nothing I hate more than having to rug up to the hilt just so I can make it to the 'kitchen' for a hot cuppa, and starting a fire every day doesn't get any easier when it involves trudging outside for fire wood along with all the bending over that's involved. My knees just aren't up to all that crap so early in the day.
Cheers,
Bob

While I have taken a bloody great grinder to my Workmate, I haven't damaged the basic frame at all really.
All I'm saying is that if anyone wants my old frame they're more than welcome to it.
It's just a matter of replacing the ground out rivets with some small bolts and nuts.
Cheers,
Bob.
