Yahooo, he is back and the build continues, (sorry, I'm not good at the puns). Sir you have been missed, but glad you had a good time.

    Paul,

Thanks for your welcome back. It is most appreciated. Looking forward to continuing my build. I have bought a book - "Richard Trevithick - Giant of Steam" by Anthony Burton (Aurum Press) I have had it on order for 3 months. Interesting read. I am a real Trevithick fan after working on his loco. I think he was under rated for his great pioneering work. Recommend the book.

Thanks again and glad (sort of) to be back.

    All the best

    Keith

Back out in the shed to make the track for my loco and tender. The Peny-Darren run was conducted on angle iron track supported by sleepers. I have used 90 X 45 pine to make my track. I have cut down the 90mm to 45mm and now have square timber. I have used my table saw to cut the internal sections out to give me an angle iron shape. Because the loco and tender is over 2 metres long, I am making the base, track and sleepers in two 1200 mm lengths so I can move it around. I will bolt the 2 sections together for display. The photo below shows one of the 4 sections of track. These track lengths are 1100mm long. Good to be out in the shed and the base is on track for a good outcome.

    Regards

Finished off the 4 "angle iron" pieces of track. Painted them "cast iron". Will be making up individual clamps to secure each piece of track to each individual sleeper. I have calculated that I will have 15 sleepers on this 2.2 metre length of track. Now on the last legs of this enjoyable build.
Reckon I have another 2 to 3 weeks of work till completion.

    Regards

Just read Trev's thread. Looks like puns are really coming to the fore in this forum (fore um) (is that a pun?) - pretty bad if it is.

Anyway, today I made 30 track clamps to secure the track to the sleepers. Still a bit of sanding work to be carried out on the clamps. I will then paint them as cast iron. The third photo shows how they will clamp down on the rail. They will be screwed to the sleeper. I intend to weather the sleepers in a similar way to how I weathered the tender timber.

I can see it may get to a point where I need to apologise for the puns!
But I need to keep it going until Crowie drops something on his foot
At that moment all the planets will align and I'll be able to work the greatest pun ever.
    Because I'm building an Indian

But all jokes aside I can see your steaming ahead with the tracks.
It's going to look so great mate.
A truly wonderful piece of work and a credit to you!

    Cheers
    Trev.

The down side to toy making is when you have to make a bunch of the same little pieces. Like turning the 48 little spokes for my Speedster build. Making 30 clamps had to get boring. But nice work. It is all looking great.

    Paul,

Yes, it's a wonder I didn't fall asleep on these sleeper attachments. I think the little repetitious things make the builds we do so much better.

    Thanks or your comments

Well now that you have a little R&R you are all rested the build is continuing with full vigour. The tracks are looking good and I know what it is like to make a lot of repetitive pieces I have done it on some of the model boats I have made.

    Keep up the good work

    Thanks for the comments.

When the Peny-Daren locomotive is complete I have been told by "She who must be obeyed" (Cathie), that I have to do some work around the house . Side fence to backyard, tiling a walkway, refurbish BBQ area, make some outside seating. Looks like model making may have to go on back burner. I suppose I have been on this build for 5 months - nearly continuous. Maybe a go slow on the Trevithick loco or tell her she has to stop quilting (probably a suicidal act) LOL. Continuing on track today - no pun intended or maybe it was.

    Regards

    Keith

Well I cut up the 2 base boards and now placed the unweathered track in position just to get my bearings right. I think it looks pretty sweet. I am making up joiners to allow me to butt up the 2 bases for both the loco and tender. Overall length of base and track will be 2060mm and will be 720mm wide. I have 5mm (approximate) river pebbles (grey) for my ballast. Now out to weather the sleepers using angle grinder and wire brush. A long task but will be pretty rewarding I think.

Keith, I get the same from my wife and she is correct, I have other things that need doing. So I decided to discipline myself. I work on other things during the day, then around 3 or 4 pm I quite and head to my shop. I spend the evening in my shop. I find I almost get as much done on woodworking as I did when I puttered around with it all day. There is a period of withdrawal that lasts a week or two.

Yes it does look good Keith, but maybe the next project will need to be an extension on the display room......
    You'll need 2.5m x 1.0m for this one..cheers crowie
