Thread: All the way around Aus

I love Eungella! Excellent birdwatching there, with Regent Bowerbird, Eungella Honeyeater, Bridled, Graceful, Yellow-spotted Honeyeaters and Topknot Pigeons.

You inspired me to pull out my birdlist from my last visit there; I had 105 species that day, including new lifers in White-throated Gerygone and Eungella Honeyeater. It feels like it was only last week I was there, but it was actually 12 years ago!

I love that part of the world. Thank you for bringing back the memories.

My son caught a once in a lifetime Barra in that dam about two years ago. Great spot. Check out the caravan park if you want a site with a view and a very interesting proprietor.

Finally left Mackay this morning after a great break mainly staying at Mkyturner's (Troy) holiday house down at Shoal Point. Thank you mate for your hospitality

I planned to stop, and did make it, just to Flaggy Rock ~100kms south. Very hot here, like most of Qld and this site has a pool . Only just made it though

The trailer is fixed and reloaded again. They removed the A-frame and used a 100x10 plate on the outside each side stitch welded to the original. They were done firstly by the younger guy, but then ground out and done again by the owner as just not good enough, mind you the final welds are not the best I have seen either . Certainly should be ok though. The A-frame was then bolted and rewelded back onto the trailer.

I had to redrill new holes for the u-bolts that hold down the lower box but the bolts were ok (previously installed on angle). I also gave the whole lot a good coating of silver gal before rewiring the plug back up.

I left this morning heading for Rocky, but when I got there and got out of the car it felt like 40 degrees and not a breath of wind, so got back in the car and headed off again. Stopped at Calliope River again and was enjoying the sunshine with a cool breeze, but then the storms came, now sitting inside van cooking dinner with rain/lightning/wind all round. At least it is cool and I am glad I picked the high side again

Been staying with Chief Tiff (Ian) in Bundaberg now for a few days helping out when I can . Tonight the family took me to see the turtles landing on the beach . Photo of Loggerhead turtle laying her eggs, pretty crappy by phone, but you can get the idea. Pity I can't be here in 8 weeks when the little ones hatch out

Well I am finally home and my Big Trip is over . I have managed to travel 25,100kms, used 3,867litres costing $5,933 with an average of ~14.7litres/100km (or 6.8km/litre or 16miles/gallon if you prefer ). My trip computer said I averaged 14.4litres/100km so not quite right, but considering my all up load was ~5.5t for the ute/camper/trailer, both are quite reasonable. Below is the graph of fuel consumption averages over each fill during the trip. Mountain ranges, flats and short stints without the trailer/camper become pretty obvious.

I will be staying in the camper in the driveway for a while yet, my bedroom is still over-flowing with stuff, stored there whilst the house sitters were there.

A big thank you to all the forumites that offered me accommodation/meals/company/help/give aways etc etc etc. Had a great time but now I need to reconsolidate my finances, tidy up my storage areas and workshop, plus store all the timber I collected along the way of ~1.5t .

Next trip will be probably after Xmas but only a short one ~2months down south. I need to pick up ~750kgs of blue gum I slabbed in Melb, but had to leave behind stacked and stickered, and hopefully attend some more turnabouts/get togethers along the way

Nice to see that you are home OK, Neil. It will give you a chance to recover from the shoulder injury properly I hope. Maybe start planning on a larger trailer for next time something in the 3.5 tonne range.

Lots of people refit a second hand bus for their grey nomad trip bur I think a pre-loved road train would be a better starting point for a woodie.
