That's hardly a reason to reject the entire machine,

That is a little gem. Prior to electronic CMM machines something like that was used to measure small parts. You would line up edges or features using a microscope and then crank the carriage over to the reference and read off the number. I vaguely recall seeing one at the National Measurement Institute. It would be very heavy and the sort of thing someone who collected optical devices would absolutely love.

Wonder if Stuart will roll the dice? I had it in my watch list (won't be bidding) prior to the mention just for novelty sake. But then I also have no use for my Mitutoyo Height Master.. makes a great door-stop at 30kg!

I'm not sure whether people remember or not, but the scraping on the one at the NMI looked superb.

This is indeed a little gem. Upwards of US $250,000 (yes that is the right number of zeros) depending on accessories it was the peak of the pre CMM era. Now just a collector's curiosity for those of us interested in old high end metrology. I will be bidding on this but have tried to buy a couple in the past and they generally go way beyond my budget. Unfortunately its not obvious if the usual T slotted table and glass table come with it (it has the dividing head on it at the moment). The glass table allowed illumination from underneath. No obvious centers or the other usual work holding pieces. These machines had a mind boggling array of accessories to choose from all at ridiculous prices. If anyone plans to go and have a look pre auction would love to hear from them.

    Thanks

    Mark

I see there's another pricey chunk of granite coming up in a couple of weeks from the boeing auctioneers....stored outside rather than a climate controlled room, yikes!

This one hell of a granite table at 1.9 x 5 m!! Inspection grade and has been up for sale since last Boeing auction. I tried to buy it when it was at the sale but they wanted $5000 or so. So it didn't sell and they had to extract it out of the small room it was in and transport it to Bendigo. Not sure who actually owned it (the auctioneers or Boeing still) but now they have tacked it onto there next auction. It has been for private sale at $8000 +BP/GST. Has been stored under a tarp outside for near on 2 years (which I don't think would be a problem) and sitting on some tyres (can these big tables warp?)
Will be interesting to see if it sells this time!

Couldn't remember the tee slots on that one, was wondering what sort of engineers would store something that way and have the possibility of a fork or similar running into it....looks like a car park.

Probably, what, 2 grand to move it down there too.

I know a few from the forum were at the auction earlier. I didn't stick around too long. How much did the the two Boley lathes go for?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hi Joe,

The 5LZ went for $2800 ( including rip and gst ) The winning bidder was a telephone bidder, so I'm doubtful the winner would have seen the machine close up.

My big ticket purchase for the day was the schaffner cylindrical grinder.
