At that stage I wish I had had the confidence to go on my woodturning lathe (an old GMC piece of I don't know what) Now I am joining the Woodworking club I am looking at a new lathe. Maybe variable speed - up to $1500 ??? with a chuck.
Happy how top of stack turned out (HaHa) with different fixtures using metal turning lathe.

    Regards

Weĺl aint that grand ... i open this thread as it comes to an end lol

    Better late than never.

    Great build, excellent finish.

Liked the steamed panel on the tender too.

I thought it was real track. Coming from being a member of a mini rail i can say you have done very well. They would be truly impressed.

Well done on a superb model and look forward to part two from the society.

    Derek,

Just been informed from the UK that there will be a second write up with the Lion on the tracks. It will probably be quite a while down the track (possibly 6 months) Keep you informed. They have also sent me an application form to join their Society - which I will do.

    Hi Guys,

Well I said I was going to make up a stand to display the 2 locomotives that I have built over the last year and a bit. Here it is with the 2 steam locos displayed. I made the display shelving with enough height to the roof (750mm) to accomodate my next locomotive build. The stand is 2300mm long by 700mm wide.

This has left me in a real quandary. Do I proceed with my next steam locomotive or do I use this as a display on the evolution of the locomotive. The bottom being Trevithick's 1804 first locomotive, the second being the 1846 Lion locomotive - Do I make the top tier a diesel locomotive ? If I do I was thinking of an "N" or "S" Class diesel.

I am thinking that another locomotive similar to the Lion might be out of place in this display. That the diesel should be the logical way to go ?

What do other Forum Members think ? Whatever way it goes - it will be a big build the next one, with a big focus on detail.

    The display looks great Keith.

Maybe a Diesel you say for the next build.
All the style and grace of a "House Brick" I say!.

How about something like an old AEC Motor Rail?.
It's a little different than a train being more of a cross between a truck and a tram.

The one below is pictured in Mornington circa 1923.

A good looking thing I reckon.
Some of them even used to pull a second class carriage.

    Cheers Mate

    Thanks

    Outside the square

    Interesting thought - not a FORD !

    Don't know !!!

Have to love it - before I build because it will be at least 6 months ??? Don't sort of love it - yet. Any other diesel loco ideas ?

    Regards

    Keith

    Hi,
I think you need another steam loco before the diesel, something from around 1895 to 1905, like the Garret that plied the Cape to Cairo line that never finished.
Just a personal feeling it would be too big a gap to go straight to a diesel.
Good work so far and the ideas make it sound like it will continue.

Thanks - a Garratt - now that's pretty mind boggling. I know Trevor would agree on that. I am going up to the railway museum in Newport tomorrow to take some photos of the locos. Haven't been for years. See what comes up.

Like the idea of a Garratt - see how we progress.

    Thanks Again,

    Keith

The first Garratt engines were built in 1909 for the Tasmanian Government, North-East Dundas Tramway with a gauge of 2'. These two engines, or rather parts of them were restored to service in 2006 for the Welsh Highland Railway.

Where to see Garratt engines in Victoria.
There is one operational Garratt in Victoria and that is G42 at Puffing Billy at Belgrave. The engine operates mainly at weekends, occasionally when traffic demands mid week.

I believe that there are two other Garratts that are on the Bellarine Penisula Railway. One was in the ARHS museum at Williamstown, the other in the Puffing Billy Museum at Menzies Creek.

I think you need to do a few more engines to show their development before doing any 1950's locomotive with an internal combustion engine.

Just my thoughts, but I am a steam buff, and you are the builder.
