But, remove a section with the router and glue in a matching bit. Those were the droids I was looking for.

23rd May 2015, 10:34 PM #152In the design the Dovetails on this end cap are meant to be an opposing force for the vice.I have included a image of how it should be done.
So to get to this point I have glued two timbers together to make the end cap and taken them down to 100x 75. Removed material to create a channel so it mates with the bench, drilled holes to for the bolts and captive nuts etc.
As you can see in the photo the piece has cracked and damaged the lap part of the lap dovetail. I think I am going to have to do the whole end cap again as gluing the crack may not hold when the vice is clamping. Bugger

NCA I thought a biggin might have been appropriate due to my love of routers.
Paul now that I have the post mortem results in there was a failing of my technique in a number of areas that lead to the crack - sawing, the way that the waste was bunching up and not being removed effectively so this kind of contained the force and pushed the energy out the side , going too close to the scribe line too soon with the waste still intact etc. I think that one of the major issues with using blackbutt is that you never really know what's under the surface but this is also the reward. I will heed the advice and crack on making a new one.
SDM thanks, it is cactus - sad but true. Lucky I am not in a hurry

Pacman, if you are concerned about the possibility of splitting because the timber you are using is brittle, or because you are chopping close to an edge ... place a clamp across the sides, and/or use a backing board.

Alan
You found that on the road? The flotsam is a lot better around your way than up here.

Disappointed . I thought Paul had actually done some work on the bench.
Nice find though Fletty. Did it accidentally get loaded into the trailer? Those were the droids I was looking for.
