Too true Pete but he asked what tight was, not how tight do you want them. Finger tight may have been his concept of tight.

Hi,
I went one better, I was fitting a cylinder head to a Healy Sprite when the spectator asked "aren't you afraid of over tightening those? " and as I was answering "no you can't over tight en cylinder head bolts" there was an almighty bang as the bolt broke off at the last thread in the head and the tension sent the stud and nut through the ring spanner with enough velocity to put a dent in the bonnet. Needles to say I learnt I was wrong and he learnt not to stick his head under bonnets and ask questions.
RegardsHugh

I have a little side project on at the moment involving some (sort of interesting) machining.
We are about to replace the cables on a couple of winches and needed a cradle to run the cable spools in. It involves a couple of pieces of UC (Universal Channel) and some plastic rollers with bearings.
Pretty much two rollers per channel so two shafts and two bearings on each roller.
The brief was to notch the channel to suit the turned down ends of the shafts so as to make them captive and profile turn the plastic and machine recesses for the bearings.

Hi Phil,
If you have a shop vac, something I picked up from someone on the forum is to set it up near the tool vacing up the plastic swarf as you make it, no more spaghetti!
Great work as always.

Hi Stuart,
love that idea. I have a shop vac at home but not at work. I spent an hour and a half cleaning up as I had used the both colchester lathes and the Dormac mill in this project.
The cleanup was lifted straight from trade school using a bannister brush and shovel. The only thing missing was the crotchety trade teacher in the grey dust coat.
I now have visions of a massive cone fitted to the end of a vac which I would've needed as most of the plastic turning was hand fed for roughing and the 'spaghetti' was going in all directions. I even got the giggles at one stage.
I'll put in for a vac at work but as the boss keeps telling me "you can't have everything" I hate it when he's right!
I really can't complain though.

Nice Work
Phil
Nice work, I have the feeling you were very happy doing this project.
Satisfying to see it all finished & working.
Also good to read your imperial & thous rather than this metric stuff .
I liked the bit about the brush & the grey dustcoat, a step back in time !
regards
Bruce
ps Also have the same problem with the slow motion when typing a post.
It takes me an age to just type this, that is why I don't place posts very often.

Some funny things happening with the Forum still. I keep getting truncated pages. Nothing below the last (I hope) post on the page, including the page navigation boxes. A couple of days ago I scrolled down to read a post by Stuart, I think and got the copyright etc info that is at the very bottom of the page as his post. Everything in between had got lost.
The Insert Image window comes up looking like it has lost all formatting.

a 3ft 4" piece of HSS steel what lathe did that come off Phil?
Nice bit of work there. One of my old bosses just stuck a round steel bar through lifted it with the fork lift clamped blocks in place to stop it moving and did what needed to be done.
Your method much more professional

Thanks Bruce,
I'm having a ball especially seeing as the boss is supplying drawings. I have always been a 'chalk on concrete' man but these drawings are making it a doddle.
And they are in (mostly) imperial
Hi Dean,
that's the sort of thing I was getting. It nearly drove me insane.
Hi Ray,
Well spotted . That's the second time I have done that. I would like to say the two keys I needed are too close together on the keyboard or it's dyslexia or even old age but I think it's just plain stupidity
