Many thanks Andrew, I finally got it. I kept reading BIII as a product not a ratio, when I finally realised I should read it not as B*III but as B/III etc. then it all fell into place for me. Just the way my brain has always worked I guess.
thanks for your patience with me I owe you a bottle of red.
And thanks again for the spreadsheets, I should practise more with those also.

Eric,
Excellent!.
Just for completeness, attached is the pitch chart updated to show imperial thread pitches as well as metric.
It seems your lathe should be able to cut many imperial threads to a very close accuracy.
Also just noticed that the MOD 1 pitch is very close to 8 TPI (3.175 mm pitch), which raises some other possibilites for imperial lathes.

Thanks again Andrew, I will print them out and pin them up next to the lathe.
Next I'll make a dividing head, buy an involute cutter and make some gears, should be fun.
Thanks to you and others I'll have a better idea of what I'm doing
