128 Hand Rails
Considering there was enough timber left over after cutting out the Toe Rails it worked out fine to commence the fabrication of the Coach Roof Hand Rails. There isn’t much stuff on the internet but my trusty library provided some hints on a way forward. I decided they would be 700mm long and 28mm wide – in keeping with my left overs. Bill Gardens are very smick but unfortunately the construction details are missing so have gone for a different approach.
I have tapered the Rail from the base to the top – not by much but just enough to, hopefully, take the chunkiness out of them without compromising the integrity of their purpose. I have cut them, profiled them, tapered them, cut the hand holds, (no photo) and they await rounding and finish sanding.

129 Hand Rails Cont…
My first attempt to steam them to shape was not what I wanted. During bending I lost one to a knot in the wrong place! Ah well, that’s how it goes some times. Anyway, it cracked in the middle so am able to get two small handrails for inside the dinky cabin. They should be good enough to assist hauling myself out of there in the future. Waste not, want not! I have subsequently fashioned another so apart from some final finishing I almost have my Hand Rails in play.

130 Winch Bases
I have moved on to the reinforcement of the Coachroof for my new, second hand, old and salty winch bases.
In an effort to provide as much support as I can I copied Bill’s idea and fabricated a couple of pads that I have epoxied to the Coach Roof. In lieu of a circular base Bill has them reaching back to where they have a firm base on the Coach Roof athwartship member. Seemed like the thing to do but I am also adding further support with some cypress pine underneath as shown in the last pic below. I epoxied the top yesterday and will do the bottom tonight. All up this gives about 22mm of support and is spread out so am happy with that.
Just have to decide if I paint them or varnish them. eeek!
I removed the Aft Trim to make it easier and screwed down the fwd end through one of the Winch Base bolt hole positions

131 Bright Work
With no further large wood work pieces outstanding the work on the bright work can begin. Unfortunately the weather is not conducive to this – you know – epoxy work and varnish work.
Anyway, I have commenced the process and have gathered all my outstanding pieces together including the Handrails and their under deck reinforcing pieces, the Toe Rails, and the Bulkhead trim together with their small Grab Handles. I didn’t realise how much was there until I put it all in one place….gulp!
There is one extra piece in there that doesn't belong on the boat. A piece for one of our garden seats that rotted out.
I have managed to get 1 coat of Bote Cote Epoxy, Hardener, TRPDA on 4:2:1 ratio (see pics below) and have now sanded that back with 120grit ready for the next couple of full strength coats. I’m hoping that I can actually get these on without sanding between them but the weather and work needs to be in my favour to accomplish this. Now isn’t the time! However, they sit there all sanded ready to go.

132 Brightwork Cont...
Unfortunately weather and work keeps getting in the road of my build but have been able to get another coat of epoxy on trim. I'm now in the process of sanding that back and will do the other coats once on the boat prior to varnishing.
The other task I have completed is the epoxy filleting of the Coachroof support beams inside the
Cabin - if ever there was a job on this boat that is/was a right pain in the $&@) it was this! I thought the filleting was bad enough but the sanding! OMG!! I've completed the Stbd side but still have the Port to go. I wanted to get this all finished prior to attaching the Coachroof Grab Handle reinforcements on the Deck Head.
The great thing is the that weather is improving allowing work in the shed to take a step up.Laurie - away from the sea

133 Handrails Cont. #2…
I have finally got it done. The reinforcements for the Handrails on the Deckhead are now in place and the interior just needs a final rub down before the interior painting can begin. In hindsight these could be completed and shaped prior to the Coachroof being installed. The job would have been so much easier.
P1010150-2.jpg P1010154-2.JPG
Just need to enlarge the bolt holes in the Coachroof for the Handrails and fill with epoxy. Then need to drill out again to fit the bolts going thru - I am concerned the ply deck would be a magnet for water that may get thru the sealant between the Handrail and the Deck so am following the process to seal and reinforce the holes prior to installation. Just following the Goughen Bros process here.
Just a shot of the Winch Bases and their reinforcement on the Deckhead.
P1010157.JPG P1010151-2.jpg
I am also getting closer to finishing the sanding of all the Trim. Next step there is attach the Rub Rails prior to the final sanding of the Deck as I want a flush fit across the two. There is a thought that the Rub Rail should sit below the Deck surface but I am unsure about the Mahogany edge standing up to the wear and tear.Laurie - away from the sea

Just had this conversation on another forum. I prefer to have rub rails flush with the deck. If it's lower, the deck edge is vulnerable, which I don't like and defeats the reason for the rub rail. If you want some sort of architectural detail in this area, install a toe rail, a bit inboard of the deck edge.

This is a good example, the rub is flush, with a modest toe rail set just inboard to have a deck reveal.

134 Handrails Cont. #3….
Thanks PAR – with that commentary and photo I feel confident I’m doing the right thing.
OK…almost all ready for interior paint. Bolt holes have been enlarged to 13mm, a mix of epoxy with a very small amount of filler added, allowed to go off before rubbing back to a smooth finish with surrounding levels. Still some work to do to get rid of the swirl marks from the sander - nothing to fussed about though.
P1010160-1.JPG P1010162-2.JPG P1010164-1.JPG
I have hit a snag with the size of SB machine screws to attach the Winches. I rang my supplier today requesting 10-24 x 38mm but he just sold out! Can’t believe it - no more available until around Xmas! That length was already pushing it but all he’s got is 32mm so will have to go with that and countersink the washer and nut into my reinforcing piece. Current thickness is 29mm leaving just 3mm for the nut and washer. Maybe it won’t hurt to countersink a few mm – stop me from hitting my head on the damn things! Just means more mucking around sealing the countersink!
All the trim has been sanded and is completed ready for installation. However, I will only install the Rub Rail as it requires levelling with the Deck as mentioned previously.
Work is still pulling me away – every other week in Melbourne and travelling overseas in October so 3 weeks shot in that month in one hit!Laurie - away from the sea

135 Bulkheads Revisited
Before I go running off with interior paint, Deckhead etc I took one last look at prep before commencing and noticed the BH join was a bit “how’s your father” so added a fillet to the cockpit side where it meets the hull and the cabin top. Nothing much but it will be something that I will be staring at all day as we sail along! Not sure what happened to miss it because the fwd side is all done. Maybe when I filleted the Deckhead etc
P1010165-1.jpg
I spent a large amount of time beginning a complete clean up of the shed. It’s enough to make a man cry. I spent 3 hours on it and have only completed about a quarter of it. Anyway, it’s something that has to be done before I get to anxious with paint. The interior is beginning to look smart after removal of drop sheets etc and a good vacuum so though I would share a couple of pics. The CB Case cap is not screwed down – just put it on for effect.

Top Shelf as always Laurie! I've found it takes a lot of resolve to buils these little boats on a part time basis. The rewards comes with each task seen through though and I do think we have fun eh?
Best,
Greg

Hello Laurie!
I wOZ just going through your terrific thread as guide again. Thank you over and over. Can you advise what the width of the majority of you floor boards are please? I'm trying to do my layout and it is a bit taxing. Looks like somewhere in the 110 to about 125mm range? I'm still amazed and inspired by the quality of your build!!!
Best, Greg

Hey Greg - Great to hear from you. The Boards running fully Fore and Aft are 95mm. The outliers to these just fill the available space left over ie. against the CB Case and against the Floorboard Margins. Hope that helps.
Cheers, LaurieLaurie - away from the sea

Yes, That helps thanks! I am also pirating your approach to floor board removable sections though I will not be able to include a lovely grate as you have done. Hat's off to you... I would have stumbled all over getting floorboards to synch up with length's, supports et al. I think I'm 90% finished with 90% to go... As a follow up to a much earlier topic; I am planning on adding stays and using a modification of the Wooden Boat magazine hinged mast plan. I suspect you will be doing something custom engineered which I will watch with keen interest.
Best to you and the cats!

Hi everyone - a question. As you can appreciate I am at the moment of truth for the attachment of my Toe Rails to the deck. My deck is planned to be oiled so what do I use as the sealant between my Toe Rails and the deck. Do I oil initially and then attach the Toe Rails? Or do I need to attach and then oil? The plan is to use bronze bolts in oversize holes so the sealant can do its job there also as well as the bearing surface of the Toe Rails.
I have asked this question on the Wooden Boat forum also so am interested in any response.Laurie - away from the sea
