Anyone know where to buy Mallee Burl - have included pic of latest piece I have done
Hey G'day folks,
First time I have come across Mallee Burl, I rescued a piece from a fire pit. It just looked too good to let it keep burning. I was told it is Mallee Burl/root and made good with burning.
I really don't have a clue as I've never used it before. Whatever it is, it came up a treat it machines very well with my CnC smooth finish.
I only put a clear oil on it.
I'd like to buy some more of this type of timber if anyone has a resource that can point too in Victoria would be nice. perhaps if anyone has any they would like to sell drop me a line.
Cheers,
Steve

Don't know where to buy any Mallee Burl, but the carving came up really well. You should be proud of that.

I would post this over on the woodturning forum.
Those members are more likely to know about burls.

Very good save from the fire.
One source would be the person who put it in the fire. They seem to know that it burns very well.
Nice carving. How much sanding did you do after the CNC machine finished cutting?

Been a long time between drinks, no sanding at all. 2mm ball nose. Only used a pointy ss piece of wire to dig out some bits caught in grooves.. Apart from that all my work effort is put into the mesh to make sure my cnc isn't wanting to carve things that are not there or make unnecessary pits.

That is very interesting and looks great!
How long did your CNC machine take to make it?

Hey G'day,
From start to finish - I had to lvl the piece front and back that took about 45 min of juggling it around. The actual carving about 2.5 hours. I could have probably done it in less time and could shave 30/40 minutes off the carving but I had never carved mallee root before so it was go slow till I worked out how it cut.
No rough cut was done so its straight ball nose/finishing pass as the depth of cut was just under 16mm.
I still haven't found a reliable source of Mallee Root yet. I am looking at giving Boab wood a shot as well it look interesting and has a nice grain, only came across Boab by accident bought a none functioning clock one of those miserable plastic clock things people put on really nice pieces of timber.
Cheers and avagreatday.

I use mallee root charcoal in my charcoal bbq, burns rice and hot. It comes in 20/30kg bags I think so someone up the chain of production may know.
