Xanthorrhoeas[/URL]] The simplest method is a short length of chain inside to stop the top at comfortably open. There are some beautiful brass folding stays available too (see Goods and Chattels site).
I've never seen the point of using classy hinges and then just dragging the whole thing down by using a chain, a stay can be made to look like quality, but a chain, YUK!

    Just my personal taste.

the other David (Xanthorrhoeas) got me thinking, Lee Valley carry a 9mm x 800mm Piano hinge, which when cut to a suitable length would just fit your 5mm sides.

note that these little hinges attach with flat head escutcheon pins rather than screws

    Hi All,

Thanks for your help, I wouldn't have found hinges without your assistance. I ended up re-milling some timber (in my triton tablesaw) to the thickest I could achieve - 8mm. I ordered piano hinges from Lee Valley in the US, and used a chain stay. I had to glue the stay in place with araldite and shorten the screws for it. Also the hinge is spot glued to give it strength. Overall very happy with the result. BTW the chain and hinge are the same colour, even if the photo shows differently. Finished with tung oil and wax.
