I'll have to do my charlatan bit here because my Atkins knowledge is very shaky, but there is an anomaly with their 400 saws. Despite being top of the Atkins range and being more expensive than any other saw of the time they did not have carved handles. Not even the early models.

It flies in the face of trends of the time where the more expensive saws had more wheat carving (sometimes floral carving in the case of Atkins) than their lesser brethren.

As Hiroller said, love to see some pix.

at the time of writing i thought that myself, just to show the comparison between the drawings and the eBay sellers.

ya know, i don't think i have ever taken a picture of a tool before, i don't know why, some i think are beautiful but its all in the touch and feel (god, can you actually feel intimate with a tool and feel that if you spread their picture all over you are betraying them lol), pictures never seem to do them justice. the Rex and some others just feel like bliss and are my favourites, whereas say the 300 from a later year i don't much like nearly as much, (and i think i may have a 400 as well, just couldn't find it the other day, my saws are in one of three places, in a of a few old carpenters toolboxs that get taken to a job (though i sold my old trade trailer recently), or some just hang on a wall with a bunch of assorted tools, waiting for a small repair or something (looks like one of those old wooden farm shed walls, or in a saw cupboard i have that is nothing like the bling most people around the net keep there saws in, its functional, but not pretty, just looks like part of timber cladded wall that if you didn't know it opens you would think its just a wall, inside are a three rails like broomsticks (old shovel handles if i remember correctly) and rows of saws sit perched on them, it works though.

the 300, its functional but just doesn't feel anywhere near the same to me (others may like it). many i picked up over the years from markets or second hand shops for nix . because i used to go through saws pretty quick using them in renovations or demolitions so i always kept an eye out for second hand saws. some i paid decent for. some get used as they were meant to be of course. at the moment my health isn't what it should be (which is why i have a bit of time to look at this ol forum) and trying to decide what to do with everything, seems too much work to take pictures and list them for sale, just don't have the energy. or maybe donate them to a mens shed. i can't decide. a friend says they will sort it for me. or maybe i get better and can put them to use.

anyway enough of the diatribe looks stupid as i write it. the other day i was sure i had a an old book i could reference because i have the recollection the 69 rex is older than the 400, perhaps it was their top of the range at one time (Rex is german or something for King of course) and there was no model 400 yet but i might be wrong, my vague recollection is Atkins went though 3 noticeable changes in their handles, fully hand carved, semi and then the stamped, my recollection is the 400 is newer? <shrugs>. because i couldn't find the book i did a little search on the net but couldn't find the info but did notice someone happened to be selling a rex, looks just like mine, mines a little shinier and cleaner, and sharper! his looks to have about 5mm or 10mm more meat left on the blade. his sold for just $20. BARGAIN!

i know those guys get top bucks for their saws, they have a good reputation and skilled with a file (i'd like to think i am not bad either but i won't presume to say without proof-its not about me). so they have put the work in and reap the rewards, good for them, no problem, its like a business to them. I know some people that sell vintage cameras on eBay as well, they get three times what you can get the same thing for elsewhere but they have been at it for a long while and built a reputation and present better than others do. So not to knock them because they have a good rep and thats worth something (i guess i was but meant it somewhat tongue in cheek) but on the other side i just want to help the un-initiated that dont know to keep a carpenters eye out for bargains like the one for $20, i would buy that over the 400 any day of the week and even if you can't sharpen worth a dam you can pay and have it sharpened.

i'll see if i can at least attach a pic of that one...now i notice more asking for pics maybe i'll try and move some things about, shouldn't have opened my big mouth lol

    Thanks Ch!ppy.

Sorry to hear you are not enjoying the best of health. I hope things pick up for you. At least we are getting the benefit of your time here on the Forum.

This link might be of interest to you on Atkins saws:

    This is another useful link:

I could bore you to tears on Simonds saws, but this is about my limit of resources for Atkins.

Rex is Latin by the way, but you are right that it means king. I suspect the Atkins "Rex" saws pre-dated the 400.

Eek! Even if they were gold or platinum I couldn't justify that. The missus would have my guts for garters!

Mmmm... That would remove some of the gloss from a creamy thigh .

I agree on the price. Way beyond my budget, but a long way short of the highest price saw I have seen sold. It was about US$5500. The really funny thing, to my mind, was that the seller didn't realise what he had. Two bidders bumped it up in the last seconds of the auction from about $500. It was a Disston from Henry's very earliest days when he still worked in a shed out the back.

Btw, the cyclone arrived last Friday , but only had it delivered yesterday. I hope to make some progress on the installation after the weekend.

    They are the nice stories.

I once saw Stanley No 1 plane for sale in the UK and the seller had no idea what it was. Almost apologetic about offering the thing for sale at all.

A VERY nice fella left a message to the seller on the listing warning him to not let it go for nothing as it was a valuable item. Not needed as it turned out. A four way frenzy took the bid up to over 900 pound.

Hmmm, I'll have to have a look in the garage, there's at least a couple of 80 plus year old saws from NZ. They will be rubbish no doubt.
